Hendrik Pieter Nicolaas Muller
(1859-1941) was a member of the 19th-century Rotterdam merchant family of that
name. From an early age he was involved with Africa, as a merchant, diplomat
and ethnographer. He led the ‘Oost-Afrikaansche Compagnie’ (East African
Company) which traded with Mozambique and Liberia, became consul for Liberia in
the Netherlands, and later consul-general for the Orange Free State during the
Second Anglo-Boer War. He travelled extensively through Africa, Asia and
America, and published several books on these travels. Later in his life he was
appointed the Netherlands Ambassador, first to Romania and later to
Czechoslovakia. In his will he stipulated the foundation of a Fund (‘Hendrik
Muller’s Vaderlandsch Fonds’) to support cultural academic research.
daarna in Tsjecho-Slowakije.
cultureel-wetenschappelijk onderzoek.
