MTV Base is a 24-hour music channel from Viacom International Media Networks Africa. There are two different feeds of MTV Base Africa, with one catering for the South African audience and another for rest of Africa, although there have been criticisms the African feed broadcasts Nigerian music only.

History[edit]

The channel was launched in February 2005 with a live music special with live performances from local African and international artists. MTV Base Africa also promoted MTV Europe and aired some of its reality series..

On 3 July 2013, Viacom International Media Networks Africa launched an localised feed of MTV Base exclusively for South Africa,[2] with local programming, advertising and VJs.[3]

On March 5, 2019 MTV Base expanded its reach in South Africa and its now available on DStv Access in HD. Comedy Central, BET, MTV, Nickelodeon (South Africa) switched to HD on the same day on DStv.
