Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) is the transport wing of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, which operates bus services in Navi Mumbai. Presently NMMT undertaking has 475 buses catering to 3,00,000 passengers daily and operating on 77 routes. It is presently plying in Mumbai, Borivali, Bandra, Mantralaya, World Trade Center, Andheri, Mulund, Thane, Dombivali, Kalyan, Badlapur, Kharghar, Kalamboli, Panvel, Ulwe Node, Karanjade, Koproli, and Uran.

About NMMT[edit]

Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport is a major Transportation Service serving people in Navi Mumbai and its outskirt cities. NMMT's service is extending to Uran, Panvel, Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Dombivali, Badlapur, etc.. NMMT has been operating in Navi Mumbai since 1996. And till now it has crossed many milestones in Transportation Service as well as Passenger Service and Satisfaction. NMMT have dedicated their services to fulfill the transportation needs of the fastest Developed and Growing city Navi Mumbai and its neighborhood. NMMT believe in Better Connectivity, Clean Environment, Good Behavior and Moral Values.

NMMT has always welcomed new technologies and methodologies to improve efficiency and quality. Working alongside Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, NMMT has established itself firmly in the region by creating extensive network or routes.

All the bus lines add up to a total route length of 1895 kms. and have an average length of 26 kms. The average headway is about 15 minutes, the maximum being 65 minutes and a minimum of 7-10 minutes. NMMT has three depots Turbhe, Asudgaon and Ghansoli and 13 bus terminals one depot in Rabale is also proposed.

In Navi Mumbai the bus public bus services are provided by four undertakings Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT), Brihan Mumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), Kalyan ‐ Dombiwali Municipal Transport (KDMT). However NMMT is the only public transport maximum utilised by the residents and working people in Navi Mumbai.

Technology[edit]

NMMT has also established a centralised command centre. It tracks the daily movement in the buses to make its operations and maintenance more efficient. They have implemented the real-time data management system through these eight modules: 1. Automatic Vehicle Locator System (AVLS) 2. Passenger Information System (PIS) 3. Control command centre 4. Incident Management 5. Mobile application 6. Business Intelligence, Financial management system and Enterprise management system 7. Scheduling and planning 8. Automatic Fare Collection System

Tejaswini: To mark the Women's Day the Navi mumbai Municipal Transport launched 'Tejaswini' the women-only buses. It initiated 10 such buses in Navi Mumbai to ensure safe, secure and convenient travelling mode to women and girls who commute on daily basis or once in a while. This is a step to make sure that the women and or girl do not turn victim of sexual harassment on a bus or at a bus stop.

CIDCO the developing authority of Navi Mumbai was the first to provide transport service. It was being rendered as part of its development program for New Bombay. On November 15, 1979, CIDCO incorporated a separate company known as "CIDCO Transport Corporation Limited" and later on or about April 1, 1980, the campany name was changed to "Bombay Metropolitan Transport Corporation Limited" It operated in 28 routes in New Bombay and had a fleet of 200 buses. But due to continuous loss and dispute with the around 1700 working staff the company its service came to a standstill in or about February, 1984. By September, 1985, it transferred 50 buses to Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) inorder to ply service in New Bombay. However neither MSRTC nor BEST were able to provide transport service in the internal routes of Navi Mumbai. Considering the fact Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Bureaucrats and Political Leaders passed the resolution and on 22 January 1996 Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport an undertaking of NMMC was initiated. It was created to provide appropriate public transport service in the internal areas of Navi Mumbai. It was initiated with around 26 Buses.

NMMT Bus Day[edit]

Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport is one of the major public transport service provider who had organised ‘NMMT Bus Day’ on 23rd February 2016. The idea of NMMT Bus Day was meant to bring in changes in the human behaviour which can be brought in Navi Mumbai city with respect to environment, traffic situation, health of individuals perception etc.. The 15 Day long campaign was planned the event was made successful. The ‘On Street Campaign’ were organised at every corner of the city. A Bus was specially hand painted by the city artists. Local Volunteerism practice was imparted and the event received participation from all sector of the society, ie. from school and college students to NGO's to local shopkeepers to small and medium enterprises to corporates to political leaders all stood together with the undertaking NMMT to make it a successful event. They all pledge to travel atleast once a week in public transport and or car or bus pool service. The on street campaign was solely conceptualized, designed and implemented by Green Society Forum under the guidance of NMMT and NMMC Staff and Navi Mumbai Transport Committee Members.
