Peringathur is a census town in Thalassery taluk of Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is part of Greater Mahé Region.


As of 2001 India census,[2] Peringathur had a population of 42,079. Males constitute 45% of the population and females 55%. Peringathur has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 79%. In Peringathur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of peringathur historical masjid stands


It is believed that the name "Peringathur" was derived from Peringalath Ur, which means the place where great wars took place. It gradually came to be known as Peringathur. An ashram of the renowned writer "Nithya Chaithanya Yathi" is present here on a small hill, Kanakamala. Kanakamala is a developing tourist spot and the hill ranges of Wayanad and Mahe beach can be viewed from this hilltop.

Peringathur town is situated in the southern border of Kannur district. This town comes under Peringalam grama panchayath and is 6 km away from The Union Territory, Mahe. Mayyazhi river flows through this town. Nearest towns include Panoor, Nadapuram, Kadavathur, Chokli, Thalassery, and Kuthuparamba.

The national highway passes through Thalassery town. Goa and Mumbai can be accessed on the northern side and Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram can be accessed on the southern side. The road to the east of Iritty connects to Mysore and Bangalore. The nearest railway station is Thalassery on Mangalore-Palakkad line. Trains are available to almost all parts of India subject to advance booking over the internet. There are airports at Mangalore and Calicut. Both of them are international airports but direct flights are available only to Middle Eastern countries.
