POTD protected templates[edit]

So I'm in the process of doing a cleanup of unused templates. There are a couple of thousand POTD templates (see here) that are unused. Can you help me understand the purpose of creating a separate "protected" version of the template? For example {{POTD protected/2018-01-02}} and {{POTD/2018-01-02}} are basically the same. I saw that your bot is creating the duplicates so I wanted to check with you. Thanks! Please {{ping|zackmann08}} in your response. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 00:14, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

@Zackmann08: As I mentioned at Special:Diff/885253438/885257167, as far as I know they exist so the Main Page cascading protection doesn't protect the general-use daily POTD templates and their subtemplates. I see you asked about them at Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day#Unused Templates, where you're likely to get a more specific answer. Anomie 00:29, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
@Anomie: Gotcha. Sorry trying to follow too many conversations... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 00:30, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Does bot use this?[edit]

Is this Template:Unblock-bot part of AnomieBOT III functions? It is up for deletion ~ R.T.G 08:10, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

No, it's not. Anomie 14:25, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

BAG request[edit]

Hi. I saw Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/AnomieBOT III 5, and it looks like it'll be really useful. But, it reminded me that there is a growing backlog at WP:BRFA. Is there any chance you would be willing to take a look at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/DannyS712 bot 11, which extends an earlier task of mine, and/or Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/DannyS712 bot 7, which is a straightforward removal of tags (at the request of the editor that added them)? Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 04:25, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

P.S. I got a real kick out of trying User:Anomie/censorship --DannyS712 (talk) 04:25, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

Link classifier question[edit]

Do you know if there's a way for the link-classifier to recognize a link to a blocked user's page /talkpage / subpage? Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 23:58, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Not currently. Such a thing could be added, or it could be done as a separate script without resulting in duplicate API queries. Anomie 11:33, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Well I know I doesn't do that now, but I was looking at the Signpost's subscription list and figure it would be useful to have around. Is that something you could add to your script? Or make a separate new one? Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 11:48, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Nevermind, there's a gadget just for that. Doesn't behave exactly like I want, but it's good enough that I can work with it.Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 14:15, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Zotero[edit]

Hi Anomie. I've been using Zotero for research for a while and have just been exploring the generation of citations directly from it. I've set the Preferences>Export>Default Format to be "Wikipedia Citation Templates" and it has been generating {{cite book}} and friends happily. Quite often though I am working on pages where the WP:CITEVAR uses {{citation}} which Zotero doesn't seem able to generate. Being a lazy old programmer I tend to expect computers to run around deciding on defaults and linkage, so prefer the latter method accordingly. Do you know if there is an easy way to make Zotero use {{citation}}? Not a major problem, most of the time it's only half-a-dozen keystrokes to change style (told you I was lazy). Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 13:40, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Unfortunately I know nothing of Zotero beyond that it's used by Citoid for generating some citations. Sorry. Anomie 14:49, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Sorry for timewasting. Best, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 15:07, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Unsure what was wrong[edit]

Hi, I can't work out how the script can be improved, from your edit summary. Tony (talk) 02:58, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

@Tony1: (talk page stalker) Are you referring to [1]? --DannyS712 (talk) 03:14, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: Yes. Tony (talk) 07:50, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
@Tony1: Mostly the issue is that {{row indexer| <nowiki>...</nowiki>}} is conceptually broken rather than your script. But the script itself could be improved by including dates when it adds {{Primary source inline}}, and could avoid adding it to a reference where the template is already there (as in two places in Special:Diff/890235565). Anomie 11:42, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
@Ohconfucius: might be able to improve it, as the technical steward of the script. Tony (talk) 02:38, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

About your offer[edit]

Hi Anomie. In your own time, I'd like to take you up on your offer to run AnomieBOT III against those old IP blocks, if the offer's still open. The consensus is unanimous so I wouldn't have thought there'd be any Bot approval issues, but you'd know more about that than me. There's a couple of quarry queries available from that discussion. I'd say just watch out for the username accounts which always appear in these lists. Apart from that, there's no other exceptions to note. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 09:49, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

It's easy enough to adjust the query to filter out the username blocks: quarry:query/35664. Procedures for approval still have to be followed, especially for adminbots. BRFA filed. Anomie 14:50, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, looks good to me. -- zzuuzz (talk) 15:13, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
