Bots Newsletter, August 2018
BAG laurier.svg

Here is the 6th issue of the Bots Newsletter. You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding/removing your name from this list.

Highlights for this newsletter include:

  • Nothing particular important happened. Those who care already know, those who don't know wouldn't care. The curious can dig ARBCOM archives themselves.
  • There were no changes in BAG membership since the last Bots Newsletter. Headbomb went from semi-active to active.
  • In the last 3 months, only 3 BAG members have closed requests - help is needed with the backlog.

As of writing, we have...

These are some of the discussions that happened / are still happening since the last Bots Newsletter. Many are stale, but some are still active.

New things

Thank you! edited by: Headbomb 15:04, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

Dr. T. M. Sounderarajan[edit]

Why you delete TMS from the list? Balan Nair (talk) 16:26, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

It wasn't clear that there was an article on this topic already. Entries should not be added to lists of people unless there is already an article on that list entry. This can be made clearer if you link to the person's article [[like this]]. IronGargoyle (talk) 00:38, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for the link to WP:LISTPEOPLE. I appreciate it. -- (talk) 23:14, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Not a problem. IronGargoyle (talk) 00:38, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

Natesh Pillai[edit]

Why did you delete Natesh Pillai from the notable alumni for IIT Madras? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bayesian81 (talkcontribs) 20:56, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

Entries in lists of people need to have their own Wikipedia article or independent evidence of group membership and notability (see the rule at WP:LISTPEOPLE). A faculty bio by the subject is not evidence of notability. IronGargoyle (talk) 21:24, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Big Tips Texas[edit]

Updated DYK query.svgOn 19 September 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Big Tips Texas, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Big Tips Texas features scantily-clad waitresses from Redneck Heaven, a breastaurant whose body-paint events led to nudity law changes in at least three Texas municipalities? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Big Tips Texas), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Bde Maka Ska[edit]

There is already consensus on Talk:Bde Maka Ska supporting that is is the former name, therefore I don't see it necessary to start a new topic to change it. The IP user is the one going against consensus. Thank you. oncamera(t) 21:57, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

The consensus was for a move. "Formerly" vs "also" was never discussed. Even if it was, that is not an excuse for violating WP:3RR. IronGargoyle (talk) 22:03, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Alameda Science and Technology Institute[edit]

Hello there! I was wondering about why I can't edit the Alameda Science and Technology Institute's page. I would love to help, so get back to me as soon as you can! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brack Peeepol 123 (talkcontribs)

It looks like another administrator protected the page from editing by new editors. The page was experiencing high levels of vandalism. I would suggest either waiting until the protection has expired, making suggestions on the article talk page, or contacting that administrator directly. IronGargoyle (talk) 16:24, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for you're response! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:643:8500:1DE1:7C2C:7687:56E:CE42 (talk) 06:16, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Why do I keep getting undone[edit]

What am I doing wrong, I am new — Preceding unsigned comment added by ImaDiloman (talkcontribs) 22:12, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

A lot of your edits are introducing your own personal analysis and opinion into the articles. This is prohibited by Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. For other articles (like the one on the Passport of Bhutan), you are changing the style of English when there is no need. Unless an article has ties to a particular style of English (e.g., an article about Elizabeth II should use British English), the preexisting style of English in the article should be maintained. IronGargoyle (talk) 22:19, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Jimmy Garoppolo[edit]

I cant find a source right now but will be back home in twenty mins or so. Leave it up for now and I'll add in the relevant doc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:19A:C100:E5BF:4033:D30E:A844:D679 (talk) 23:33, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Pretty sure that's a troll account, based on other edits... Famartin (talk) 02:30, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Why are you accusing me of being a troll on someone else’s talk page? If you have a problem with me, why would you go behind my back rather than address it with me directly? Mustymuff (talk) 02:40, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
Because you are a troll. Just look at the edit you keep trying to put on the Route 62 article lolz. Well, you have fun now Famartin (talk) 02:46, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Happy New Year, IronGargoyle![edit]

Send New Year cheer by adding {{subst:Happy New Year fireworks}} to user talk pages.

I restored Goest Ryder to List of people from Pittsburgh because for the moment he still has a WP article. Yes Ryder's article is at AFD and at the moment looks like it will end as a delete. But I've seen an AFD closed as a Snow delete[1], then be reopened[2], and have a final outcome of no consensus[3]. Let this article stand till the AFD is finished. If it ends in delete, I'll be happy to remove it....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 15:15, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Why you deleted Mahesh Mahadev (Music Composer) article Wp-maxindia (talk) 17:58, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

I didn't. I only deleted a duplicate copy to make way for a move. It seems though that the article was recreated inappropriately from an earlier copy that was already deleted. This was done by another administrator. Please review our guidelines on notability before making further articles. IronGargoyle (talk) 18:20, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

How to get back the article Wp-maxindia (talk) 18:30, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

You can ask the administrator who deleted it or create a request at deletion review, but given the fact that it also seems to have been a copyright violation, I don't suspect anyone will be willing to undelete it for you. IronGargoyle (talk) 19:58, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

It seems that you don't know the grammar rules that apply to the word "however", and nor do you know the rules that govern when bold face should be used in articles. If you don't know these things, what makes you think you can contribute to an encyclopaedia? (talk) 22:59, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

There was a typo in your earlier edit which strongly suggested nonconstructive editing. While it's clear now that it was inadvertent on your part, the removal of the edit was still warranted. IronGargoyle (talk) 02:05, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
@IronGargoyle: I want to assume good faith but this IP address's edit summary history and the "what makes you think you can contribute to an encyclopaedia" statement above should constitute a warning of incivility. I warned this IP address yesterday with using snide remarks in edit summaries (WP:ESDONTS) but they reverted it. – The Grid (talk) 17:18, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

List of Old Emanuels[edit]

It seems that you are an annoying pedant who does nothing but change Wikipedia pages for subjects you know nothing about and have no first hand experience of. The example I am referring to is your constant random changing of the List of Old Emanuels, that being the long list of alumni of Emanuel School in London, England.

You did not attend the school, I did and am thus far better qualified to comment. You are obviously based in the United States, it stands out a mile. Stick to random subjects you know something about and do something with your life besdes living on Wikipedia being a boring pedant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MickTravis If (talkcontribs) 01:49, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Unless they stop soon, I believe this page may need temporary protection. Seems like some meatpuppeting vandals are at play. Home Lander (talk) 21:54, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Untitled numbered episode titles[edit]

If you did not know RTitle is used for these as they are not episode names and is standard practice. (talk) 01:55, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Reversion reverted[edit]

Hello, I've just reverted your GF reversion in the page about Lewis Carroll. Please see User_talk:Theroadislong#Help_for_a_noob, in which you can see my brain-dead paranoid comment, my embarrassed realization of the nature of my comment, its deletion, and my new comment. If you're suspicious (and why shouldn't you be?), feel free to take a quick look for "Aryaman" within the novel in question. -- Hoary (talk) 03:22, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

Gotcha. I reverted a bit further back to where Dodo was part of a valid link. IronGargoyle (talk) 03:31, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

Please explain deletion in Brewing in Oregon? I am unfamiliar with you reason, (rv unreferenced nn). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Madcowbrewing (talkcontribs) 16:30, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

List entries like this must be referenced with substantial coverage in independent (not affiliated with the organization) and reliable sources. You also should not make edits about organizations you are affiliated with. IronGargoyle (talk) 23:54, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Ok...well we were just mentioned in and other sources, but cool! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Madcowbrewing (talkcontribs) 18:08, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

You just reverted 17 entries I added for Fort Collins, CO, with "rv unreferenced nn." Can you explain what is required? I see several entries with no link to a website and no footnote (City Star, Crow Hop, etc), so I'm confused why they're OK and my entries weren't. Is a link to the company website sufficient? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garyfritz (talkcontribs) 20:43, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

I simply missed them. I have removed them, thank you. Unless there are reliable third-party references (i.e., not links to the company website), or the breweries have articles themselves, entries should not be added to lists like these. IronGargoyle (talk) 00:02, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
Hello, IronGargoyle. Since you're interested in breweries, or at least Wikipedia articles about them, you could try adding appropriate third-party references when other editors add new, unreferenced entries. It's actually pretty fun to do web searches to find the references, and then to add them to the articles. And of course doing so improves the articles themselves. Why not give it a shot? You might end up liking it. Mudwater (Talk) 22:50, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. In my editorial judgement, lists such as these should only contain entries which have Wikipedia articles themselves. I certainly acknowledge that there is not always consensus for my perspective on every list. Removing the unreferenced entries and adding the references are both acceptable ways to comply with the broader consensus guideline of WP:LISTCOMPANY. It's fine that you like to add these references, but I have no interest in doing so myself. I have (particularly lately) limited time on the project and this is not how I would like to spend it. IronGargoyle (talk) 00:08, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Soo Yeon Lee[edit]

Hello IronGargoyle, you wrote " In 2000, Lee won a silver medal at the World University Championships in Shanghai." According Universiade in 2000 there was not such a event. ???? Greetings --Tsor (talk) 09:13, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

I don't know. The source I probably used back when I created the article is dead. I'll look into seeing if I can find an archive of it somewhere. It's possible I read something wrong, so if I can't verify this I will probably remove it entirely. IronGargoyle (talk) 23:31, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello I noticed my addition to U Michigan alumni page was entirely deleted again. I include several references, one of which was even an official website of the state government of Michigan, which would seem to be a reliable source. Was that you deleting or someone else? Thanks Cleantruth (talk) 22:49, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Multiple people removed your addition. The sources you added later were not independent sources. While they may prove that the person you added exists, they do not provide evidence of notability. Please see WP:LISTPEOPLE. IronGargoyle (talk) 23:55, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your time explaining... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cleantruth (talkcontribs) 19:02, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 special circular[edit]

Administrators must secure their accounts

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
