ArbCom 2018 election voter message[edit]

Scale of justice 2.svgHello, Mark Miller. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup![edit]

Hello and Happy New Year!

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup, the competition begins today. If you have already joined, your submission page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and we will set up your submissions page. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2019, and which you have nominated this year, is eligible for points in the competition, the judges will be checking! Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! WikiCup 2019 March newsletter[edit]

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2. With 56 contestants qualifying, each group in Round 2 contains seven contestants, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for Round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • United States L293D, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with ten good articles on submarines for a total of 357 points.
  • Pirate Flag of Henry Every.svg Adam Cuerden, a WikiCup veteran, came next with 274 points, mostly from eight featured pictures, restorations of artwork.
  • Denmark MPJ-DK, a wrestling enthusiast, was in third place with 263 points, garnered from a featured list, five good articles, two DYKs and four GARs.
  • United States Usernameunique came next at 243, with a featured article and a good article, both on ancient helmets.
  • Flag of the United States Library of Congress 2.svg Squeamish Ossifrage was in joint fifth place with 224 points, mostly garnered from bringing the 1937 Fox vault fire to featured article status.
  • Ohio Ed! was also on 224, with an amazing number of good article reviews (56 actually).

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews on 143 good articles, one hundred more than the number of good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Well done all!

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. March GOCE newsletter[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors March 2019 Newsletter
Writing Magnifying.PNG

Copyeditors progress.png

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2018. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2019, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from all of the articles tagged in our original target months of June, July and August 2018, and by 24 January we ran out of articles. After adding September, we finished the month with 8 target articles remaining and 842 left in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 48 requests for copyedit in January. Of the 31 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the February Blitz. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 32 copyedits, including 15 requests. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: As of 23:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 108 requests since 1 January and the backlog stands at 851 articles.

March Drive: The month-long March drive is now underway; the target months are October and November 2018. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Sign up here!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Miniapolis, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

Falsification of quote[edit]

In your recent effort to edit-war away references to an advertisement as an advertisement, you have repeatedly changed a quote in order to make it "less neutral". It is not our job to rework what others say to make it neutral when we quote; it is our job to quote accurately. And given the bits of editing warring you've been doing there and elsewhere, I recommend that you review WP:BRD --Nat Gertler (talk) 11:06, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Accusations coming from someone also engaging in edit warring however with no basis in Wikipedia guidelines and what apears to be some bias against same sex marriage. At this point more eyes from the projects is required.--Mark Miller (talk) 00:00, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Per WP:VANDAL, "Deliberately adding falsities to articles, particularly to biographies of living people, with hoax information is considered vandalism." The undoing of vandalism is not subject to edit war restrictions. --Nat Gertler (talk) 02:23, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
If you wish to make a complaint, ANI is thataway.--Mark Miller (talk) 02:25, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
We are not transcription monkeys, we summarize what the sources say and if some facts show that something is both a paid ad and an op-ed...we should state it.--Mark Miller (talk) 02:27, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 May newsletter[edit]

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
  • Wales Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
  • Pirate Flag of Henry Every.svg Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
  • Kingdom of Prussia Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Chicago Barkeep49 with six GAs, United States Ceranthor, England Lee Vilenski, and Saskatchewan Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and Denmark MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2019 July newsletter[edit]

The third round of the 2019 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round needed to score at least 68 points, which is substantially lower than last year's 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Norfolk Island Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with 500 points derived mainly from a featured article and two GAs on natural history topics
  • South Carolina Adam Cuerden, with 480 points, a tally built on 16 featured pictures, the result of meticulous restoration work
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist in the last two years, with 306 points from a variety of submissions, mostly related to sport or the State of Washington
  • United States Usernameunique, with 305 points derived from a featured article and two GAs on archaeology and related topics

Contestants managed 4 (5) featured articles, 4 featured lists, 18 featured pictures, 29 good articles, 50 DYK entries, 9 ITN entries, and 39 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and it is imperative to claim them in the correct round; one FA claim had to be rejected because it was incorrectly submitted (claimed in Round 3 when it qualified for Round 2), so be warned! When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Kapiʻolani[edit]

Don't cut and past move pages. {{db-move}} and WP:RM/TR exist for dealing with such cases. — JJMC89(T·C) 19:48, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

JJMC89, I followed instructions per the page when I attempted the move the article. The article already had a redirect. Merging articles can be done by anyone including a redirect. Instructions for such a cut and past merger are at the top of; Wikipedia:Requested moves#When not to use this page. I do not believe this was a technical issue but a simple merger of two existing articles with a request for history merge however, if you could elaborate on what you felt was the technical issue that made this merger inappropriate or if there has been a change to the merge process I am unaware of, please let me know. Thanks!--Mark Miller (talk) 23:43, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
WP:BEFOREMOVING (section of Wikipedia:Moving a page, which is linked on Special:MovePage/Kapiʻolani) clearly states to never move by copy and paste. The instructions in the section you link (first bullet), which I did not refer you to, say to use WP:RM/TR, which is where I referred you to. Kapiʻolani was a redirect with a single revision in its history, not an article, so there was no merge. In situations where a merge is actually done, a history merge usually cannot be done due to parallel histories. — JJMC89(T·C) 00:17, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
Regardless of what you referred me to, it was after the fact. As I stated I followed directions. Wikipedia:Moving a page is a how to guide. "It is not one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community.". It also does not say; "Never" so that is not clear. Also, you stated (as I also noticed before the merge) the redirect had only one revision and it doesn't seem to have been a problem. By the way, excuse my misspeaking. Page...not article. A merge is between two pages not two article so, yes it was a merge. What I did was a full-content paste merger. I do understand the issue you are talking about but it does not apear to be the case here since there was almost no real editing on the redirect page, I believed adding the attribution tag and not asking for a a history merge in this case was not appropriate.--Mark Miller (talk) 00:57, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
At any rate, Special:MovePage/Kapiʻolani had no instructions at that point to heed. It was not until instructions came up after the normal move process was held up by the page existing as a redirect. I followed those instructions precisely.--Mark Miller (talk) 01:17, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Backlog Banzai[edit]

In the month of September, Wikiproject Military history is running a project-wide edit-a-thon, Backlog Banzai. There are heaps of different areas you can work on, for which you claim points, and at the end of the month all sorts of whiz-bang awards will be handed out. Every player wins a prize! Photo of opening of Tut's tomb[edit]

Mark Miller, I'm confused by the explanation of the removal and then restoration of the Times photo from the article.

According to the Times site, the photo was published in the paper on Feb. 17, 1923, so the claim on Commons that this was a 1924 reenactment seems odd on the face of it. It may be that the photo is indeed out of copyright, since it was published in 1923, but the rest of the information on Commons would seem to be suspect based on the Times site. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:44, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

I have no idea what you are talking about. I made it clear that copyright law after 1922 gives extended copyright from the time of the original copyright for an automatic extension of 28 years plus 67. If the image was copyrighted in 1923 instead of 1922 it is still in the public domain. My initial math was off when I pulled the image but figure out my mistake and returned it and then struck out the concern (but left the text for transparency).--Mark Miller (talk) 04:36, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

Unexplained removal?[edit]

Hey Mark, How is this unexplained removal. See my edit summary where it says rv linkspam. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 06:24, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Try an actual diff and if I am mistaken I will apologize for any mistake.--Mark Miller (talk) 06:29, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
I meant https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kamehameha_Schools&diff=912840926&oldid=912840520 ‐‐1997kB (talk) 06:32, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Ok so, how exactly is this dead link spam? Look, I am not against you or your editing, but you need to explain your edits in full or it does not make sense to others.--Mark Miller (talk) 06:36, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Well I don't know how you determine its a dead link. It's working fine for me and seems like spam, see for more https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Spam/LinkReports/lms.paktaleem.net . ‐‐1997kB (talk) 06:39, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Look, I do not question your good faith. I question your ability to explain your actions and provide evidence to make any judgement. Stop adding links to nowhere and provide a clear explanation as to why the link is spam.--Mark Miller (talk) 06:55, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
(edit conflict) On this link they offer some courses and that's the reason that guy added it to a school article and bunch others to lure people to buy those courses. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 07:00, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Edit conflict. Can you understand that you deleted a link as spam but did not and still have not demonstrated that the link that does not currently provide information, had an original target page that was not correctly added. It isn't that I doubt you but that once an editor has reverted, that is a dispute. At least try to do more at that point to demonstrate your position. I, myself only wish to make sure the link you deleted did not have relevance.--Mark Miller (talk) 07:08, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Well, don't you think it falls under WP:ADS that is adding references with the aim of promoting the site? Also would love to know why you think this link is good for article? ‐‐1997kB (talk) 07:22, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Could be and probably. It was late last night and the article is about a school and the source appeared to be about classes. Had a bit too much going on at the same time. I had wanted to make sure the page had not changed and if the site itself still had the info somewhere but it really isn't worth it since the source isn't that string to begin with. I'll revert that so it does not look like you are edit warring.--Mark Miller (talk) 16:36, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for that! BTW you forgot to undo this one. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 16:55, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Well that was odd. I wonder why reverting myself didn't do the trick? I fixed it.--Mark Miller (talk) 17:45, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open[edit]

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:38, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 September newsletter[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Re: Info box hieroglyphs[edit]

An artefact that has his full titulary is the cedar throne Carter obj. No 87 JE 62029 here. It uses the Horus name in serekhs as a central design motif. The full titulary is given on the back of the backrest but is unusually written as it gives an image of the king as a determinative for 'twt' image. I'm getting this info from p 61-62 of The Thrones, Chairs, Stools, and Footstools from the Tomb of Tutankhamun by M. Eaton-Krauss. She cites herself for a fuller discussion of his titulary in 'The Titulary of Tutankhamun' in: Jürgen Osing and Günter Dreyer, eds, Form und Mass. Beiträge zur Literatur, Sprache und Kunst des alten Ägypten (Fs Gerhard Fecht; Wiesbaden 19 which sounds absolutely impossible to get a hold of. Merytat3n (talk) 02:30, 8 September 2019 (UTC) Pasting here as well so you can easily see this reply Merytat3n (talk) 02:53, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

Lets attempt this after the GA so I can finish the review but, I rescanned the two cartouches and did a trace SVG only so the image has the right shapes from the source. The symbols cannot be copyrighted.--Mark Miller (talk) 05:02, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

Tutankhamun cartouches.svg--Mark Miller (talk) 05:15, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

Sounds good. Thank you for all your hard work! I am seeing if a friend can scan the above article on Tutankhamun's titulary for me out of the library so we will see what it says. In the meantime I feel Amarna Sunset is as good a source as any as it gives the full titulary in hieroglyphs. I have the titulary in my sandbox currently. Merytat3n (talk) 09:51, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

Okay the friend tracked it down and pdf'd it for me! It gives nice clear hieroglyphs and aaaaallll the variations (there are so many). I will continue working on the hieroglyphs in my sandbox if that suits you? Just let me know how you want to proceed. Merytat3n (talk) 23:48, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

I selected what Eaton-Krauss says are the most common writings of each of Tutankhamun's names. They are all sourced in my sandbox but the hieroglyphs are preeeetty ugly and not at all arranged nicely. I can arrange them nicely in Jsesh (if my computer wants to play ball) and save them as an image file. I can give you Eaton-Krauss' pdf as well if you would like. Merytat3n (talk) 03:10, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Yes, please. I have been getting a pretty good education on authors of this subject and I hope we can augment all of Hawass' claims with additional support. Just so his opinion is not given undue weight in the article.--Mark Miller (talk) 03:12, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for September 8[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Tutankhamun, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Thebes (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
