Game hint lines[edit]

I came across an article in GamePro about live game counselors and 900 hint lines which has one or two useful pieces of info. The trouble is, I can't seem to find an article on Wikipedia where such information might appropriately go. Any suggestions?--Martin IIIa (talk) 20:34, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

There's probably enough coverage to convert Nintendo Power Line into a broader concept of Video Game hint lines, of which the most famous was the Nintendo Power Line: Kotaku, A.V. Club, the line was revived for the NES Mini launch (Engadget, CNet, Polygon), Wikia (unusable as a source but can be used as a base for research), featured in The Wizard, that time when one number was bought by an sex company (N4G, NBC, Wired), Gamasutra, Felicia Day biography,, Sierra Hint Line (this is an archive of 1989 Sierra Magazine), Sega, Konami also had their own Hint Lines.  · Salvidrim! ·  20:55, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Quebec articles[edit]

You're most welcome! Funnily enough, you caught me right in the middle of wrestling with trying to find adequate sources to get a long-overdue article about the actor and writer Marcel Sabourin done!

I'm one of those editors who, while I don't write French well enough to actually be a contributor on FR as such, I can read it well enough to pull out the important facts from a newspaper or magazine article — and since we do have a problem with a lot of Quebec topics getting inadequately addressed on the English side, I do make an effort to help fill in some of the gaps when I can.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to a database of older French-language newspaper content the way I do for the major English dailies, so I'm mostly stuck with what I can find on Google — which (as with Sabourin right now) isn't always very solid or reliable for people whose peak notability and sourceability was 30 or 40 years ago instead of within the past few years. Well, if you ever need some help with French translations I'm your guy. I do whatever cleanup and wikifying I can but I'm not that good at creating brand new articles indeed! Sergio Calderón[edit]

Hi Salvidrim! I have declined the speedy nomination you placed on Sergio Calderón becuase the new article was not "substantially identical" to the deleted version. Also, although the previous discussion was closed as a delete, the only participant was the nominator, meaning per WP:NOQUORUM it should be treated as a soft delete. I went ahead and restored the article history, because that version cited a source, which I re-added to the article. However, I have concerns that Sergio Calderón may not meet WP:NACTOR, and a (admittedly quick and superficial) search did not turn up any additional sources. I agree the first AfD should have been closed as WP:SOFTDEL; in any case the article being ineligible for PROD, and now with the source the article is no longer eligible for BLPPROD as well, perhaps you might be right that an AfD would be justified. @John from Idegon: Jeez, read at least the lede of WP:PROD. "It must not be used for pages PRODed before or previously discussed at AfD or FfD." If the recreation is substantially similar, then G4 it. If it is not substantially similar, send to AfD if you believe the article topic does not meet our inclusion criteria. I read it. You have a unique interpretation of "article" apparently. This is a new article. This article has never been prodded or deleted. A previous article on the same subject was. Unlike AfC, PROD is not a referendum on the notability of the subject. It's stricktly about the article at hand. Example A guy writes an article on the non existent kingdom of Foo. He has a source (a blog he wrote), so there is a claim to notability and speedy is out. Its prodded and deleted. A year later, he creates the exact same article. G4 does not apply as it was not deleted via discussion. So in order to delete that, we have to waste the community's time with an AfD? Sorry....makes no sense. Although many of our policies are obscure, nit-picky, etc, I've seen few that are outright nonsensical. I'll start a discussion on the policy talk page. You're welcome to discuss changes to deletion policy. Unless you contend that the content at the title Doug DeMuro today is about a different article subject (different person) than the subject which was examined in the previous AfD, the policy is crystal-clear that a PROD (aka discussionless deletion) cannot be used when there has already been a previous AfD (aka discussion about deletion). If the recreation is substantially similar to the AfD'ed version, then G4 it. If it is not substantially similar, send to AfD if you believe the article topic does not meet our inclusion criteria. Aha! There was one critical word, the "my" in "my artist", that gives it away. I also see now their real name from the email, which lines up with other accounts in the revision history... Obviously my focus was on the false positive report. The edit appeared to be constructive, so I did my part of saving it on their behalf. I figured the "Manager to Glovibes" in the signature was pretty explicit. And it's okay that you only responded to the falsepos, that's the point of the mailing list, that's why I tagged the article and provided on-wiki guidance via the welcome. Stephen J. Blackwood - proposed deletion[edit]

Forgive my ignorance in not knowing how these things work-- you undid my revision (which was in itself an undoing of a revision) re-adding the proposed deletion notice. I only added the notice back as the grounds for its removal seemed flimsy in the first place, and I believe it should remain given that the consensus was to delete the page. I'm obviously going about this in the wrong way, but I certainly don't want to take such drastic action as deleting the page myself... if you've any advice to give on what action should be taken, I would be glad to hear it.

  • Hi, first of all PRODs can be removed/contested for basically any reason. However anyways, as mentioned WP:PRODs (discussionless deletion) can only be used when there hasn't already been a PROD or discussion. In this case, if the new article is substantially similar to the version deleted at AfD, then WP:CSD#G4 might apply. If the current article is not substantially similar and you believe it fails to meet the threshold of Wikipedia's inclusion criteria, you can file a new AfD. After creating Lâcher prise, I tried to add it to List of programs broadcast by Ici Radio-Canada Télé, only to find that article deeply out of date — it literally hasn't had a serious update in over 11 years, and still features charts for the prime time schedule as of 2008. (Yes, I know Tout le monde en parle and Le Téléjournal haven't changed, but I'm sure almost everything else has.) If you're living in Montreal, I have to assume you'd have at least somewhat more knowledge about its programming than this Trawna boy over here does, so I wanted to ask if you'd be willing to assist in getting it updated. Obviously if we're going to be this incapable of keeping it updated consistently in the future, then we should just blow the schedule chart out and convert it to a straight list, sorted either strictly alphabetically or by genre — but I need a cheat sheet just to keep Global vs. CTV vs. Citytv shows straight even though I get those channels, so I'm not the right guy to tackle it. I do believe the task is daunting and not feasible to keep updated. Straight list, sorted by year of debut and with airing years in parenthesis (sectioned by decade if too large) does appear more workable. Ben · Salvidrim!  05:06, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
I also don't think we would need to overthink it — we probably don't need to undertake a massive project of trying to compile a complete list of every show the network ever aired all at once, it's mostly just a matter of reorganizing what's already there, adding what else we know off the top of our heads, and just letting anything else we've still missed get added over time as people identify it. My concern is mostly around not knowing very much — obviously the odd Radio-Canada or TVA show still gets onto my radar sometimes, but the majority of it just floats right past me without denting my awareness at all. I can realphabetize the existing list pretty easily, I just need help with the expansion part. Bearcat (talk) 21:11, 28 April 2019 (UTC) is probably the best option. The difference is that the category only includes shows for which Radio-Canada was the originating broadcaster, while the list permits the inclusion of any show they verifiably aired at all, even if it was purchased from another network and/or dubbed from another language and thus can't be categorized as one of that network's original shows.   • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.


  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC seeks to clarify whether WP:OUTING should include information on just the English Wikipedia or any Wikimedia project.
  • An RfC on WT:RfA concluded that Requests for adminship and bureaucratship are discussions seeking to build consensus.
  • An RfC proposal to make the templates for discussion (TfD) process more like the requested moves (RM) process, i.e. "as a clearinghouse of template discussions", was closed as successful.

Technical news

  • The CSD feature of Twinkle now allows admins to notify page creators of deletion if the page had not been tagged. The default behavior matches that of tagging notifications, and replaces the ability to open the user talk page upon deletion. You can customize which criteria receive notifications in your Twinkle preferences: look for Notify page creator when deleting under these criteria.
  • Twinkle's d-batch (batch delete) feature now supports deleting subpages (and related redirects and talk pages) of each page. The pages will be listed first but use with caution! The und-batch (batch undelete) option can now also restore talk pages.

Hi again! I've managed to finish transcribing the automated speech-to-text output from the Runaway: A Road Adventure behind the scenes video I mentioned on WPVG's talk page. Most of it makes enough sense to me, but there are a few key parts that got too garbled to reliably use. If you have time, I'd really appreciate it if you could clarify some of these for me! Luckily I only need a French transcription—Google Translate is more than powerful enough these days to handle the conversion of the French to English.

The first one starts at this timestamp and runs until 9:39 (I've had to put a space in the URL to get around Wikipedia's blacklist):

Non consciemment, non je ne l'ai pas fait. En fait je me rappelle que dans une partie qui n'a pas une grande importance dans le jeu, Suzie fait référence au groupe A, qui sont deux filles aqueuse qui prennent la tête à tout le monde. Je leur ai donné les prénoms de mes nièces Alva et Arana, er je les ai mises là pour qu'elles soient contentes quand elles joueront au jeu, mais autrement non.

Star Wars titles[edit]


Je sais pas si tu te rappelles, tu m'avais aidé sur des traductions (notamment)....

Bref, je voudrais savoir si tu peux me renseigner sur les pratiques ici concernant les titres, les barrières de langage étant moins importante en français (pour moi!).

Sur Wiki en français, on applique les règles typographiques anglaise sur les titre anglais. Je me pose la question des titres Star Wars :

Sur wiki en anglais il y a "Star Wars Jedi Knight": Dark Forces II mais aussi "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" – Jedi Alliance
Pour le premier, "Jedi Knight" est inclus dans le titre avec "Star Wars", sans deux-points, alors que "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" conserve les deux-points et rajoute un second sous-titre et un tiret.

Pourquoi la page n'est-elle pas titrée "Star Wars The Clone Wars": Jedi Alliance

j'ai résumé le problème sur ma pdd sur Wikipédia en français :

Un truc étrange également, c'est qu'il y a Star Wars: Battlefront et pas Star Wars Battlefront..; mais il y a Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron

  • Règle génrale, la typographie d'un titre d'article de jeu vidéo est simplement déterminée par la personne qui crée la page; ça reste tel quel tant que personne d'objecte et souvent pour une question d'un deux-points ou tiret y'a pas vraiment de raison de s'obstiner alors le status quo maintient simplement le titre choisi par le créateur de l'article. En cas de dispute, on se fie généralement à la manière dont les reviewers écrivent le titre dans leurs articles. Souvent c'est en relation directe avec la typographie sur les matériaux officiels (cover art, posters, etc.) et la taille des lettres de chaque élément respectif. MOS:TITLEPUNCT spécifie seulement qu'on préfère en général (pas juste pour les jeux) un deux-points à un tiret, à moins qu'il y ait deux sous-titres. Ben · Salvidrim!  23:08, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
  • Salut! ha bon, ca m'arrange pas, je croyais apprendre des règles complexes mais écrites, je vais voir ce manual of style, pour voir ce qu'il y a dedans... Ca a l'air plus simple que chez nous, si tu regardes le débat pour un seul espace avant deux points [2]. Il y a pas grand chose, c'est un peu maigre.
    Je viens de trouver Wikipedia:Article titles et Wikipedia:Naming conventions (video games) - mais il n'y a pas les réponses à mes questions.

  • En théorie, si c'est ce que les reviewers utilisent et que y'a pas déjà eu de discussion sur le sujet, y'a probablement pas de grand problème à faire le changement, mais faut aussi se demander pourquoi changer quelque chose qui n'est pas "brisé", t'as toujours quelques bornés qui tiennent au status quo "à moins d'une bonne raison".   • Ok. le problème réside dans les règles typo françaises pour des titres d'œuvres, qui imposent de suivre les règles de la langue du titre. Ainsi, en résulte des problèmes d'uniformisation et de cohérence des titres sur cette franchise, sur Wiki en français (ce sur quoi on est pê un peu plus à cheval)... C'était là le problème/but de mes questionnements, afin de comprendre comment sont choisis les titres ici, et pas de renommer à tout prix dans un projet dans un langage n'étant pas ma langue natale ^^.
    Mes recherches sont les deux seules que j'ai effectué en prenant deux titres totalement au hasard dans ma liste que j'ai dressé de titres "non-uniformisés"... Fort à parier que je dois pouvoir renommer la plupart des autres titres de cette liste (je peux pas croire qu'en prenant deux titres au hasard, je tombe sur les deux seuls à renommer, il doit y en avoir une majorité, c’est obligé, question de statistiques...).
    Bref, ce n'est pas vraiment important.
    En théorie, je dois pouvoir renommer uniquement sur wikipédia en français, suivant les besoins... (certes, que wikipédia en anglais utilise le même titre aurait pu aider à confirmer le choix des graphies, mais c'est pas bien grave....)

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

    Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.
