Earlier this month, Intel introduced first budget dual- and quad-core systems on a chip, built on "Gemini Lake" design. As you may know, previous generation of processors for inexpensive desktop and notebook computers was based on "Apollo Lake" design, which was produced on 14nm technology, and combined 2 or 4 "Goldmont" CPU cores, Intel HD 500 or HD 505 graphics, DDR3 / DDR4 memory controller, and a host of I/O interfaces. "Gemini Lake" SoCs are also based on 14nm process and incorporate 2 or 4 cores, but come with a number of improvements.   [Full story]

Jul 18, 2019: Server downtime

CPU-World server will be taken offline on July 18 at 10PM US Eastern time. One of server's hard drives has failed and needs to be replaced. Replacing the drive shouldn't take more than one hour and I expect the site to be operational by 11PM EST.

Dec 04, 2017: In-house ads

I implemented support for in-house ads, that are intended to promote different areas of the website: memorabilia pages, CPUID and benchmarks database, CPU release dates pages, etc. The in-house ads are very lightweight and they are hosted by our site, which means they should be a bit faster than other ads. I configured them to replace up to 20% of all displayed ads. This ratio may be changed in the future.

Oct 16, 2017: "Browse CPUs" dialog added to CPU and comparison pages

CPU comparison section of CPU pages was improved. In addition to the CPU selection field, that displays a list of all matching models for specified name and characteristics, I added a new CPU browsing dialog window, where you can browse processor models for specific family, socket, codename or microarchitecture. Similar processor browsing feature and CPU selection by name and specs field were also added to a page, that compares multiple microprocessors.

Intel launched Xeon Phi microprocessors, codenamed "Knights Mill". Apparently designed for deep learning applications, new Xeon Phi 7235, 7285 and 7295 CPUs are produced on 14nm process and branded as "Xeon Phi x205 series". With the exception of 15% - 30% higher TDP, characteristics of "Knight Mill" Xeon Phi processors are comparable to older Xeon Phi x200 series. The CPUs are compatible with socket 3647 based systems.   [Full story]
This fall, Intel is expected to introduce first 8th generation desktop microprocessors, codenamed "Coffe Lake-S". Specifications of these processors have been leaked more than a month ago by users in the forum and on the bulletin board system. According to posted specs, Intel plans to beef up performance of 8th generation Core products by increasing the number of cores to 6 on i5 and i7 families, and to 4 on i3 family. The size of last level cache will be also increased. The leaked specs were recently confirmed by an update to socket 1151 CPU support list on the ASRock website.   [Full story]
Intel launched Skylake-based Xeon W-2123, W-2125, W-2133, W-2135, W-2145 and W-2155 microprocessors for single socket workstations. New CPUs, branded Xeon W, come with 4, 6, 8 and 10 cores, rebalanced three-level cache architecture, extra AVX-512 execution unit, quad-channel memory controller and PCIe 3.0 interface. The processors are compatible with socket 2066. Intel also announced 14-core W-2175 and 18-core W-2195 SKUs.   [Full story]
Atom C3000 series of "Denverton" systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) for server, storage, networking and Internet of Things markets was expanded with 14 new processors. The first member of the C3000 series, dual-core Atom C3338, was launched back in January. New chips, released this month, feature more cores, larger cache, more high-speed I/O lanes and support for faster DDR4 memory.   [Full story]
Intel released the fastest Xeon E3 processor for socket 1151 workstations. The CPU has a model number of E3-1285 v6, and it is manufactured on Intel's latest microarchitecture, codenamed "Kaby Lake". The processor features 200 MHz higher clocks than the former Xeon E3 v6 flagship model, the E3-1280 v6. Like all E3-12x5 v6 products, the new CPU comes with integrated graphics unit.   [Full story]
Last week, Intel announced August 21 launch event for 8th generation microprocessors, codenamed "Kaby Lake-R". The announcement did not provide any specifics on new CPUs, but the most recent update of the official Intel pricelist revealed model numbers, prices and brief specifications of 4 mobile processors. According to the pricelist, the first to launch will be Core i5-8250U, i5-8350U, Core i7-8550U and i7-8650U ultra low power chips. The most notable thing is that all 4 processors will come with twice as many cores and twice larger L3 cache than top 7th generation "Kaby Lake-U" models.   [Full story]
