Most people rope friends, boyfriends, and husbands into snapping all their social media pictures — but when you're Kylie Jenner and you've got 146 million followers scrolling through everything you post, a sloppy snap from an amateur just won't do.
Enter Amber Asaly, Kylie's friend — and personal photographer. The 26-year-old snapper spent the summer traveling the world with 22-year-old Kylie, shooting the reality star and makeup mogul in exotic locations like Turks & Caicos, Las Vegas, and Italy, generating millions upon millions of likes in the process.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan, Amber shared just what it's like to shoot Kylie on vacation — which she explained that she did not because the star was paying for her, but because she's just a really good friend with a creative streak.
The perfect picture: Kylie Jenner's amazing Instagram photos aren't the work of some amateur
Valuable people: The 22-year-old's photographer friend Amber Asaly is responsible for many of the snaps she posts
Documentation: Kylie brought Amber along on much of her travels around the world this summer
Keeping record: Amber documented the whole thing on film, and Kylie shared many of the snaps
Amber is, in fact, a professional photographer by trade. But when she came along on Kylie's travels this summer, it was in the function of friend, not paid employee.
But, she said, she is naturally always shooting, and documented the whole thing for social media.
Many of Kylie's most-liked photos were the summer were Amber's handiwork, and the artistically-minded hanger-on also snapped Travis Scott, Stormi, Scott Disick, Sofia Richie, and Kris Jenner.
'Kylie invited me on her Kylie Skin trip as a friend, but also to catch the vibes and get cute pictures,' Amber told Cosmo.
'And when I'm in a beautiful location with beautiful people and I happen to have dope cameras, I'm gonna do my thing no matter what. And they want dope pictures too, so it kinda just works hand-in-hand.'
Classy: The 26-year-old Laguna Beach, California native is a friend of the reality star
Earning attention: She's racked up over a quarter of a million Instagram followers of her own
Friends and family discount: Kylie doesn't pay Amber to be her photographer, but Amber does it as a friend
'I'm in a beautiful location with beautiful people and I happen to have dope cameras, I'm gonna do my thing no matter what. And they want dope pictures too, so it kinda just works hand-in-hand,' she said
Beautiful people: She also shoots Kylie with some of her other friends, like Stassie (pictured)
Amber snapped on vacation with Kylie, explaining: 'All the girls had just beautiful clothes. Their makeup was done, their hair was done, so everything kinda just turned into a photoshoot'
Hurry! When they were out and about in Italy it was a rushed affair, since paparazzi could turn up at any moment
She insisted that the photoshoots kind of created themselves, given the amazing wardrobes the women packed, their impeccable hair and makeup, and the beautiful scenery.
'All of Kylie's amazing outfits, all of Sofia's amazing outfits — all the girls had just beautiful clothes. Their makeup was done, their hair was done, so everything kinda just turned into a photoshoot,' she said.
'It would just be us hanging out and me being like, "Okay, we gotta go to the beach right now, the sun is setting, we gotta shoot this."'
Amber shared her method, too, explaining that she shoots on film — not digitally.
And while she could spend 15 minutes getting the right shot when the group was, say, hanging on the $250 million superyacht that Kylie hired for her birthday trip, when they were out and about in Italy it was a much more rushed affair, since paparazzi could turn up at any moment.
Whole crew: She also took photos of Sofia Richie, who came along on the trip
Family affair: Kylie's mom Kris also popped up in snaps, as did baby Stormi
Snapper: She's shot other members of the family, including Kourtney Kardashian
Amber also raved about Kris, calling her a 'queen' who knew exactly where to go and what to do in Italy.
Her snaps have started earning her recognition as an artist, and she has over a quarter of a million Instagram followers in her own right.
But it's not the first time she's earned attention on the platform.
Back in November, the Laguna Beach, California-born socialite celebrated her 26th birthday inside a J train in New York City, bringing decorations, a piñata, and even a lobster dinner on board.
Amber documented the whole affair online, posting pictures and videos on Instagram and in her Instagram Stories.
She explained that she, her cousin, and several of her friends had had reservations for the evening but they 'fell through,' so instead they decided to throw an impromptu fete on a Broad Street-bound J train.
Some venue! In November, she celebrated her birthday inside a J train in New York City
Fancy fete feast: She said reservations 'fell through' so her friends organized the party, which went viral
Making a mess: The birthday girl opened up gifts while sitting on the floor of the subway, where they scattered streamers and confetti that they didn't clean up
Drink up! She also sipped from an enormous glass of wine while other subway riders ignored the birthday girl and her party
According to the New York Post, the group boarded the car at the Myrtle-Broadway stop in Brooklyn at about 10:30pm on Wednesday night.
Once on board, they hung decorations from the walls and ceiling, built a table, and set up a tablecloth and set up plates and silverware. That's where they place an entire dinner of lobster, spaghetti, and bottles of white wine.
'Each friend collectively grabbed a bag. Then we installed the table on the train,' Amber said.'We all dressed up. We made it like a Michelin-starred restaurant. That was kind of the whole point.'
Amber also had plenty of gifts to pose with, and at one point swung at a piñata being held aloft by a friend.
The party lasted the length of a ride from Brooklyn to Manhattan and back once the trained turned around, 20 stops in all. Amber said the event was 'crazy' and her 'best birthday ever'.
