- The Accident finale saw Harriet found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter
- Family of victims broke down as she was sentenced to seven years in prison
- Viewers branded show 'awful' and joked it's so 'terrible', it's 'compulsive' TV
The Accident viewers slammed the series for being the 'worst show' they've ever seen following last night's 'awful' finale.
The episode of the Channel 4 show saw the court case decide who was responsible for the deaths of several teenagers following an explosion in a small Welsh town.
Harriet Paulsen, played by Sidse Babett Knudsen, was overseeing the project where the explosion and subsequent building collapse happened - and was found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter and sent to prison.
But rather than being gripped by the hour-long finale, those who tuned in were left feeling like they'd wasted their time - and were quick to express their views on Twitter.
'It's so terrible it’s compulsive watching,' wrote one, while a second penned: 'If you’re going to bed now please say a prayer for those poor souls who are watching #theaccident on ITV1+1.'

A third added: 'Final part of #Theaccident last night. Didn't do it for me I'm afraid as I never felt like I cared about anyone. Sounds awful, and I am a very caring person so not sure what it was,' while a fourth commented:
'The only accident here was me choosing to spend an hour watching this s***'
After the jury found Harriet guilty, the family of the victims broke down in the stands.
The judge then declared: 'These events were brought about by a hideous set of circumstances and the flouting of basic health and safety rules to cut costs and build an inherently unsafe structure.
'This has led to the unnecessary deaths of these children and the lifelong suffering of their families. So it is horror I feel today, not tragedy.'
For the offence of gross negligence manslaughter, Harriet was sentenced to seven years imprisonment, of which she was told she would serve half before being released on license.

And fans who dedicated the last four weeks to the programme were left bitterly disappointed.
'Channel 4, your writers owe you a refund. Possibly the worst show I've seen in my life,' commented one, while a second penned: 'Surely I’m not the only person watching #theaccident (and it’s stellar cast) purely to see if it can possibly get any worse?'
A third added: 'Omg this show... I don’t even know where to start... can’t believe how awful it actually is...' while a further questioned: 'Does anyone else think that #TheAccident was absolutely awful?'
Meanwhile, others expressed their shock that Sarah Lancashire - who is renowned for starring in hit dramas including Happy Valley - wanted to put her face to the series.
'There is not one part of #theaccident that’s any good,' wrote one. C*** story. C*** acting. C*** accents. Appalling attention to detail. Sarah Lancashire is worth so so much more than this awful whispering mumbling mess of a programme.'
A second agreed: 'I'm really struggling to watch the end. The acting, the accents and the story line are all awful. I can't believe Sarah Lancashire put her name to this.'
Others pointed out that along with the story line, the acting and accents were 'awful' too (pictured)
