MIDLIFE CAREER CHANGE

Until three years ago, I did no exercise. Then I left my partner of 17 years and started working out. In six months, I went from a size 14 down to an 8. This inspired me to leave a stressful job in adult education and re-train in health and fitness. I used to feel like I was drifting and stuck in a rut. I feel so much happier now. I’ve also since met a lovely new boyfriend. It’s never too late to change.

LONG LUSCIOUS HAIR

I’ve been using the same hair product, Vitapointe Leave In Conditioner (£2, boots.com) since I was 16. I apply it to dry hair, after I’ve curled it. This helps to keep my hair in good condition, gives it a glossy shine and stops the ends from splitting. It means that I can grow it out longer, without needing to get it cut so often.

MIDDAY ME TIME

It’s important to recognise when you need rest. As women, we are often too busy ‘doing’ and not ‘being’ — and we feel guilty for taking time out. However, I’ve realised that this just leads to burnout. So I make a conscious effort to prioritise ‘me time’. If I want a bath with Epsom salts at 2pm, I’ll have one!

SWAP YOUR MEALS

I don’t conform to eating certain foods for breakfast, lunch or dinner. In the mornings, I often have a plate of tuna, chickpeas, beetroot or sweetcorn. Sometimes, I eat a whole baked butternut squash. This sets me up for the day. And if I’m tired, as I’m perimenopausal, I eat lamb’s liver and I feel re-energised, as it is packed with iron.

FITNESS FASHION

Today, I am fitter and healthier than I was at 20. The right gear can make a big difference to your workout. I always wear CW-X compression leggings (cw-x.com), as they help to support muscles and joints. Plus, I buy my trainers from New Balance, as you can trial them and send them back if they don’t fit. It’s not about how fit you are, but how determined you are.
