Alan Titchmarsh has awarded Dame Judi Dench with an honorary doctorate for her services to the dramatic arts. 

The event outside Winchester Cathedral on Friday was part of nine ceremonies hosted by the University of Winchester and presided over by Alan Titchmarsh, Chancellor of the University. 

The ceremonies are to award Honorary Doctorates and Fellowships to prominent public figures - including actors, sports sensations and authors, as well as to commend the achievements of students.

An emotional Judi Dench donned a scarlet and purple gown and graduation hat for the special occasion. 

The acclaimed actress who has starred in 'Die Another Day' and 'Notes on a Scandal' made a speech to students at the city's cathedral at the end of the ceremony.

Dame Judi has won numerous major awards during her career - including an Academy Award, ten BAFTA Awards and a record eight Laurence Olivier Awards. 

In recognition of her many achievements she received an OBE in 1970, became a DBE in 1988, and in 2005 was awarded a Companion of Honour. 

Earlier this week, Hugh Bonneville received an honorary doctorate from the same university for services to dramatic arts.

The Downton Abbey actor, 55, who lives near Winchester, looked delighted as he accepted the honour at the cathedral city's university, in recognition of his 'consistent and significant contributions to the dramatic arts.'
