The Walking Dead unveils season 10 trailer at Comic-Con as Michonne faces off with the Whisperers... after Danai Gurira confirms she is leaving the hit show

Season 9 ended in a blizzard and season 10 starts... on the sunny beach?

There's never any telling what nefarious twists and turns The Walking Dead might take, but the trailer for the hit series' next season, which was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, promises one consistent element: drop-dead thrills.

The video, which lasts over four minutes, opens in the unlikeliest of places: in the surf on the beach, with a Walker floating toward the camera.

The trailer then quickly gets to matters at hand, like the ever-brewing conflict with Samantha Morton's Alpha and her band of Whisperers.

Standout moments in the clip include Ross Marquand's Aaron wielding a fierce looking new weapon, a graffiti message on a door that says 'Silence the Whisperers,' and Danai Gurira's Michonne kissing Ezekiel... and also holding Negan's cherished Lucille.

The beach is also revisited in some sprawling, intense battle scenes that feature all or most of the main cast of the show.

The trailer doesn't shy away from lighter comedic moments, though, like Norman Reedus's Daryl being teased mercilessly by Carol (Melissa McBride) for calling her his 'best friend,' or when Seth Gilliam's Gabriel exclaims to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan—seen OUT of his cell—and Aaron, 'You can fight, you are low on fighters. Peanut butter, meet jelly!'

But dangers lurk around every corner, and as usual the worst might not come from the undead... but from others who are alive as well.

In one decisive moment, Alpha warns, 'What did I tell you about crossing my border? You have to be punished.'

To which Carol fiercely replies, 'Bitch has to die.'

And with that, it's ON.

The Walking Dead's season 10 will premiere on October 6th on AMC.

A battle is brewing: The conflict with Samantha Morton's Alpha and her band of Whisperers is a major element in season 10

It should be noted, however, that not everyone will remain through to the end of the next season.

Danai Gurira has confirmed she is leaving the show.

The 41-year-old actress, who plays Michonne, announced on Friday while at the show's Comic-Con panel that she is saying goodbye to her character on the show.

She made her first appearance in the season two finale, and has been a regular fixture on the show ever since.

'I can confirm this is the last season I'll be on this amazing TV show as Michonne,' she said on the panel.

'I would just like to say this has been one of the purest joys in my life. I am very very thankful for the experience I've had in ways that I cant even express right now. My heart does not leave… it doesn't ever end, the connection between us never ends.'

'It was a very difficult decision. It was about my calling and other things I feel called to… as a creator of work. All I'm filled with is a lot of pain about leaving and a lot of gratitude and to all of you. I love you guys. TWD family is forever.'

It was previously said that the Black Panther actress was only going to appear in a 'handful' of episodes and was only going to star in the three planned spinoff movies with Lincoln's Rick Grimes.

There is no other mention of this.

'Obviously, Danai has been a huge part of this show since she came in in season 3 as the shadow figure part of saving Andrea at the end of season 2,' showrunner Angela Kang said in an interview with EW.

'Michonne is a fan favorite character from both the comics and the show, and we just love this person and this character, and we want to do right by her, which is a huge challenge,' she continued.

She went on to call her a 'powerhouse of an actress' and said that her 'performances speak for themselves' after Gurira worked her magic throughout the seasons on the show.

Kang finished with saying that there are some 'unique stuff' to this upcoming season and they 'tried some stuff that we've never done on the show with her.'

During the panel, the cast showed the teaser for The Walking Dead movie in addition to the new season 10 trailer.

The teaser showed a helicopter coming in over water and said 'Rick Grimes Returns Only In Theaters.'
