Kevin Smith is making a new Masters of the Universe anime series for Netflix

Director Kevin Smith dropped some surprise news at Power-Con in Anaheim, California on Sunday, revealing he's making a new Masters of the Universe anime series for Netflix.

The new series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, will be an original story based on the hit Mattel toy line featuring the heroic He-Man, villainous Skeletor and more.

The limited series will reportedly focus on 'unresolved storylines of the classic series' He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which aired between 1983 and 1985, according to Deadline

'I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,' Smith said in a statement. 

'In Revelation, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor!' he added.

'Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!' he concluded.

'The war for Eternia begins again! Superstar director Kevin Smith continues the original series’ story right where it left off in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, a new series telling the epic tale of what may be He-Man and Skeletor’s final battle,' the NX on Netflix Twitter revealed.

Smith himself also took to his verified Twitter, to reveal his excitement for the upcoming series.

'By the Power of Grayskull! I have to shower! No - I mean I have the flour! Myah! One more try: I HAVE THE POWER!' Smith said.

'Thank you @Mattel and @Netflix for letting my play in your Universe! I promise: this will not be a Stinkor!' he concluded, adding the hashtag #MOTU

Smith will executive produce the show along with Mattel Television's Rob David, the VP of Mattel TV and author of He-Man: the Eternity War.

The team of writers that have been assembled for the show include Eric Carrasco (Supergirl), Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen), Diya Mishra (Magic the Gathering) and Marc Bernardin (Alphas). 

Animation for the series is being done by Powerhouse Animation, which worked on the Netflix Castlevania series.

Netflix is also home to the animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which follows He-Man's sister She-Ra, though there is no indication yet if both shows will cross over.
