Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland loses director Dan Trachtenberg as Sony's newly-minted Playstation Studios comes aboard to produce

Sony Pictures' long-gestating Uncharted video game adaptation has suffered yet another setback, though Tom Holland is still attached to star.

The project has lost director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), according to Deadline, but it has gained a new production entity, Sony's new Playstation Studios.

The Uncharted movie has been in various stages of development for over a decade, with producer Avi Arad and Sony, but it has failed to get off the ground.

The movie will be the first to be developed under the Playstation Productions banner, which was set up on the Sony lot last year, headed by Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.

Playstation Productions will produce alongside Chuck Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad, with the new company hoping to lock down a director soon.

The studio is currently holding meetings to fill the vacant directorial spot, in hopes that a replacement will be named by the end of the summer for production to start early in 2020.

While this adaptation has never started principal photography during its 11 years in development at Sony, there have been several different iterations of the project.

David O. Russell (American Hustle) was set to direct in 2010, with Mark Wahlberg attached to star as Nathan Drake at one point, plus a fan campaign started to get Nathan Fillion to play Drake.

Chris Pratt was at one point offered the Nathan Drake role but he turned it down, with numerous directors attached at various points including Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses), Joe Carnahan (The A-Team) and Shawn Levy (Stranger Things).

Holland is coming off Spider-Man: Far From Home, which recently became the highest-grossing film in Sony Pictures history with $1.1 billion.

The Spider-Man franchise made headlines this week, though, with Sony and Marvel Studios failing to come to an agreement, leading to the studios severing ties.

Marvel's Kevin Feige was a driving creative force behind Far From Home and its 2017 predecessor, Spider-Man: Homecoming, both starring Holland as Peter Parker.
