He's playing the eponymous and cat-loving English artist in his latest role.

And Benedict Cumberbatch looked almost unrecognisable as he transformed into Louis Wain while continuing to film scenes in Kent on Monday.

The actor, 43, cut a very dapper figure as he donned a top hat and a smart three-piece black suit whilst riding on a 19th century vehicle.

Benedict completed his transformation with a whisker-inspired moustache as he immersed himself into the role.

The star appeared subdued as he got into concentration mode as he focused on filming his scenes. 

Benedict was joined in the scenes by co-stars Andrea Riseborough and Sharon Rooney, who had also transformed into character.

Alongside other members of the cast, they rode along in the vintage carriage, which was laden down with luggage.

In between takes, crew members were pictured approaching the vehicle as they made adjustments or gave out instructions.

At one point, the Doctor Strange star had his false moustache trimmed, with an assistant seen wielding a tiny pair of scissors near the actor's face.

The 19th century-set film follows the life of the critically-acclaimed painter, whose work was inspired by his penchant for the feline animals, as well as his partner Emily, played by Claire Foy.

Louis Wain is directed by directed by Will Sharpe, and also stars the likes of Nymphomaniac actress Stacy Martin and Daniel Blake's Hayley Squires.

While a release date for the movie is not yet known, filming for Louis Wain has already kicked off.

The sketcher was famed for his drawings of cats and kittens and was thought to have suffered schizophrenia in the later part of his life.

Silent Witness actor Benedict and The Crown star Claire, 35, have reunited for the forthcoming movie after previously working together on the 2011 drama Wreckers.

Speaking about the part, the actor told Deadline in a statement: 'I am thrilled by the prospect of playing the courageous, playful spirit that is Louis Wain and to be producing such a special film.'

Proving he is a fan of being directed by Sharpe, he added: 'I have admired Will’s work for several years through Flowers and from the moment we first met, knew he was the perfect person to bring Louis’ inspirational and odyssean story to life.

'Together we plan to bring audiences a sincerely uplifting, playful, thought provoking tale of resilience, creativity and the enduring power of love.'
