Euphoria's Alexa Demie stars in sultry photoshoot as she discusses her own 'loner' high school experience and struggling to feel 'compassion' for her character Maddy

She's one of the breakout stars of electrifying teen drama Euphoria, bursting onto our screens as queen bee Maddy Perez.

And Alexa Demie has landed the cover of Wonderland's Autumn 19 issue, discussing her own 'loner' high school experience and the weight of portraying abusive relationship onscreen when she struggled to have 'compassion' for her own character.

The 24-year-old actress poses for iconic photographer Ellen Von Unwerth in a glamorous photoshoot, modelling an array of Miu Miu looks veering from fallen angel to sultry seductress.

She said of the show's groundbreaking take on the high school experience: 'I got this script and I. Freaked. Out.'

Alexa, who first gained notoriety in Jonah Hill’s directorial debut Mid90s earlier this year, was propelled into the limelight in June when the Zendaya-fronted show began airing.

Eurphoria tackles everything from addiction and depression to body image and sexual preferences, making the petty coming-of-age dramas of 90210 and Gossip Girl look like a walk in the park.

At the centre of the show is Maddy's relationship with jock Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi); a toxic, manipulative version of first love that turns violent.

Alexa admits she struggled to understand why Maddy would stay with Nate and had to get into the right mindset before filming some of the tougher scenes.

'I would be alone before [those] scenes and listen to certain songs and think back to my past – you know, being a child and seeing a dysfunctional couple in my home and trying to justify why she would stay and allow this,' she explained.

However, she understands the feeling of wanting to try and 'change' or 'fix' a partner, an instinct she believes all women have.

Speaking about her own experience with men, the beauty said: 'When I was growing up I would not let any boy or man say one negative thing to me, because I didn’t grow up with the best male figures in my life.

She said: 'Being vulnerable and allowing that was really something that was very difficult for me and I think most of it was me trying to have compassion for Maddy'

'I actually didn’t grow up with much respect for men; I think that’s something that was built throughout time and just meeting new people…

The actress, who is also working on her music, launched her own sunglasses business when she was in high school.

Buying basic frames in Downtown LA, Alexa's fierce customising skills earned her a clientele including Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj and investment from Japan.

She revealed: 'It’s funny, because I think everyone assumes that I was a cheerleader or hung out with football player'

Revealing she struggled to connect with her peers as a teenager, Demie's high school experience couldn't have been more different to her alter-ego Maddy's.

[It was] the complete opposite. It’s funny, because I think everyone assumes that I was a cheerleader or hung out with football players', she said.

'I was quite a loner and had a lot of trouble with girls. I was bullied probably from elementary school all throughout high school so sometimes I’d leave early to avoid certain situations.

'I was in the performing arts programme in senior year and I only had one or two classes, so I’d go straight home and work on my sunglasses.'
