Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield share their heartbreak as they reveal This Morning cameraman Charlie Hart has died after a 'long illness'

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield shared their sadness as they announced a cameraman who worked for This Morning for 10 years had died after battling a 'long-term illness'.

The co-hosts of the ITV1 daytime programme opened Wednesday's show on a sombre note, revealing Charlie Hart passed away on Tuesday.

Holly, 38, and Phil, 57, sent their condolences to the long-standing crew member's family, before sharing touching anecdotes about Charlie's decade on This Morning.

Phil said: 'Charlie had generally stayed behind the cameras, they we managed to get him in front of them a few times.'

They showed snaps of Charlie with the presenting duo, with some of the crew holding up TV awards for the show, and then a clip of him taking part in one of Trinny Woodall's fashion segments.

In the clip, Charlie chatted with Trinny, Phil and Rochelle Humes, as he modelled some autumn fashion.

Comparing his outfit with Phil's, they shared a joke together, with Trinny declaring Charlie was 'everyone's favourite'.

'Some very sad news about a member of our team,' Phil said as the show opened.

Holly continued: 'One of our long-standing crew members Charlie Hart passed away yesterday after battling a long-term illness.'

Phil went on: 'Charlie spent more than 10 years with us at ITV and it wasn't just behind the cameras that he played an important role.

'Occasionally we even managed to tease him out in front of the camera, even appearing in our fashion items.

'Such a lovely guy. We will really miss him, our thoughts are with all of Charlie's family and children and his grandchildren and his wife Tina.'

Holly added: 'We just want you to know that he will be sorely missed.'

The This Morning Twitter account also posted the news, receiving a flurry of heartfelt messages from regular viewers.

'Deepest sympathy to his family ❤' someone tweeted, as another posted, 'Oh that's sad news this morning! Thoughts are with his family at this sad time!'

Another wrote: 'So sad. Breaks my heart. I am sure he is watching over. You are much loved, cared about, valued, appreciated, respected. 

'An inspiration. A role model. Sure to be ever so proud of you all. Thinking of you. In thoughts and prayers. Sending love and best wishes [sic].' 

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30AM on ITV.
