Rio Ferdinand shared a sweet picture of his three children on Instagram on Wednesday as he expressed how proud he is of them following their mother's death.

Rebecca Ellison tragically died four years ago, aged 34, following a battle with breast cancer, leaving Rio and children Lorenz, 12, Tate, 10, and Tia, eight, heartbroken.

'A lot has been thrown in their young paths but the resilience & character they have shown has been amazing.

'Living under 1 roof with 4 people that inspire me daily is a blessing.'

Rio is now engaged to be married to former TOWIE star Kate Wright, 26, who has been a wonderfully positive force in both his and the children's lives.

Back in July, she discussed her decision to leave behind the world of TOWIE and showbiz to become a step-mother.

The former reality star spoke to The Sun about quitting the limelight as she insisted his kids 'needed someone at home' following Rebecca's death.

She admitted they have worked to 'include the kids in everything' to ensure their relationship worked, after first getting together in 2017.

After soaring to fame on TOWIE in 2015, when she was introduced as the ex-girlfriend of show heartthrob Dan Edgar, she became a fan favourite, with her sizzling figure and girl's girl personality winning hearts.

Despite two years of fame, winning various lucrative contracts and garnering 1m Instagram followers, she confirmed her time in the spotlight is up in 2017.

In her candid discussion, Kate explained: 'I had two choices. I’m in this world with lots of drama and then I met Rio and the children and, I thought, "I’m with these kids, who have lost their mum, they don’t need a woman who is out all the time...

'So from the first date, him asking me to be his girlfriend, us moving in — everything — the kids were part of it. So it wasn’t me taking their dad away from them, it was more us becoming a family unit.'

Rio has found happiness again with Kate, after previously opening up about losing his wife Rebecca, in a tearful conversation six months after her death. Rio tragically lost his wife, Rebecca, to breast cancer in 2015.

The father-of-three said in the weeks following her death in May 2015 didn't 'look at himself' and instead focused on his children — sons Lorenz, then nine, Tate, then six, and daughter, Tia, just four. It was 'all about the school run, the basic stuff,' he said.

Talking in the immediate aftermath of losing his wife, Rio said: 'I’m sitting there thinking how can I ever be happy. I’m happy over here, but I look at my children and that brings me back to sadness again.

'I was ignorant myself, I was thinking no way am I going to go see a shrink. On this journey, I got a great understanding that there are some fantastic people out there who help.'

And while he did not contemplate suicide, Ferdinand said he had a better insight into those who consider it: 'I didn't think about it myself but I understand people who get into that situation.

'Before I'd think that guy is so ignorant and selfish. Now I wouldn't do it but I understand why he's there.'
