After calling his friend and Hangover franchise co-star Bradley Cooper a 'hot idiot' in  Between Two Ferns: The Movie, Zach Galifianakis apologized on Monday.

The 49 year old actor revealed in an interview with Variety at the red carpet premiere in Hollywood, that Cooper thought it was funny.

'He just laughed. He doesn’t care. He’s good-natured that way,' Galifianakis said at the premiere, held at the Arclight Hollywood.

Galifianakis, who also wrote Between Two Ferns: The Movie with director Scott Aukerman, added that the scene where he called Cooper a 'hot idiot' was featured in the trailer, but it's not in the actual movie.

'There’s something in the trailer and he’s not even in the movie, but I refer to him as a "hot idiot." I called him when I saw the trailer…I was like, ‘I called you a "hot idiot."'

He added that he doesn't want to 'hurt people' with his comedy, but 'I do want to make them feel weird. There’s a fine line there.'

The scene in question from the trailer comes when Galifianakis is interviewing Jon Hamm, where he brings up Cooper's success with A Star Is Born.

'Bradley Cooper co-wrote, starred in and directed A Star Is Born. Are you hoping that will open doors for other hot idiots?' Galifianakis said.

Galifianakis' Between Two Ferns first started as a sporadic comedy web series in 2008 on Will Ferrell's Funny or Die, that steadily grew in popularity.

Galifianakis added on the red carpet that he had initially thought of making a behind-the-scenes TV show about Between Two Ferns, but that ended quickly.

'A few years ago we were going to try to make it a TV show, a behind-the-scenes of Between Two Ferns, but a friend of mine told me no one would be interested in that and at the time I agreed with him,' Galifianakis said.

He added that the timing is right now, but he conceded, 'to take a sketch and blow it up into an hour and a half narrative, it’s risky.'

The star-writer-producer added that he wasn't even aware until the premiere on Monday that they hadn't actually lined up any celebrity guests when they started filming.

'We just started filming things,' Galifianakis said. 'Once we got some guests, people switched their schedules, storylines changed because we were writing on the fly and that’s a tricky thing to do…In the end, it was so much fun to do.'
