Tom Welling will reprise his role as Smallville's Clark Kent on The CW’s Arrowverse crossover

It's been nearly a decade since he portrayed a young version of earth's original superhero, but he is now slated to revisit the role.

Tom Welling, whose career was launched by his ten-season portrayal of a young Kal-El/Clark Kent on Smallville, will reprise the role on The CW's upcoming multi-series crossover known as Crisis On Infinite Earths.

Welling will guest-star as the Man of Steel in the television event that will involve the series Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Welling, who last played Kent in the final season of Smallville in 2011, is one of three actors to portray versions of the superhero in the crossover, joining Tyler Hoechlin as the Arrowverse’s Superman and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow‘s Brandon Routh (who famously played the hero in Superman Returns).

It is unclear exactly how Tom will figure in the action, but it will indeed shed light on where his version (or, universe) of Clark ends up eight years after the Smallville conclusion.

In conceiving of the Crisis on Infinite Earths multiverse and multiseries crossover event, producers always prioritized bringing Welling back into the mix.

'For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it,' crossover executive producer Marc Guggenheim released in a statement.

'So when we first started talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths, our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent,' he continued.

'To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.'

In the interim since the end of Smallville, Welling has appeared in the films The Choice and Draft Day, and on the series Lucifer among other titles.

Aside from his appearance on The CW crossover, Welling will next be seen in the series Professionals, opposite Brendan Fraser.

The CW's massive Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover TV event begins on Supergirl on Sunday, Dec. 8th, followed by Batwoman on Monday, Dec. 9th and The Flash on following day.

After the winter break, the crossover will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 14th with Arrow, and will conclude with Legends of Tomorrow immediately following.
