Natalie Portman's Thor: Love And Thunder character Jane Foster may battle breast cancer says director Taika Waititi: 'That's really powerful'

With Marvel's highly-anticipated Thor: Love and Thunder bringing back Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, director Taika Waititi hinted one of the character's iconic story lines may be transfered to the big screen.

While doing press for his new movie Jojo Rabbit, Waititi, 44, was asked by Variety's Marc Malkin if Jane Foster will have breast cancer in the movie.

In the comics, Foster is diagnosed with breast cancer before being chosen by Thor to represent Midgard (Earth) at the Congress of the World on Asgard.

When asked if that breast cancer story will be reflected in the upcoming movie, slated for release on November 5, 2021, Waititi said it's possible.

'We're not sure if we're going to be doing a complete lift of that whole story line,' Waititi began. 'These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes.'

Like, ‘Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.'”

With all of that being said, the writer-director said that he thinks that part of the comics is worthy of inclusion in his movie.

'I think that's a really powerful part of the books. I think it's really cool that she's fighting this thing and there's two battles going on.

'Personally I really love that storyline. But whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen,' Waititi concluded.

In the comic book run, created by Jason Aaron, Jane's diagnosis of breast cancer comes at the same time as Thor is told a mysterious secret by Nick Fury, which leads him to become 'unworthy' to lift his mighty hammer, Mjolnir.

A mysterious woman then is seen picking up and wielding Mjolnir, making her the new Thor.

It is later revealed that the mystery woman is in fact Jane Foster, and while she wields Mjolnir and fights as Thor, she's cancer-free, although the cancer (minus all chemotherapy) returns once she returns to human form.

Portman starred as Jane Foster in 2011's Thor and the 2014 follow-up Thor: The Dark World, but she didn't return for the 2017 blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok.

Marvel made the surprising announcement at San Diego Comic-Con this summer that Foster will return in Thor: Love and Thunder.

She will return alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, with writer-director Waititi also voicing Korg from Thor: Ragnarok.
