And John Travolta looked delighted as he stepped out on the red carpet for a tribute event held in his honour at the Rome Film Festival in the Italian city on Tuesday.

The actor, 65, will be honoured with the accolade for his performance in The Fanatic, which is about a crazed fan who becomes a violent stalker.

John was dressed to impress for the festival, as he wore a sharp black blazer and trousers with am unbuttoned white shirt that had a ruffled design.

Opting for comfort over style the actor slipped into a pair of sleek black loafers, and he kept his accessories simple by wearing a watch.

The Grease icon put on an animated display as he hit the red carpet and posed for photos, before meeting with fans to sign their memorabilia.

The festival's artistic director Antonio Monda said of John winning the Best Leading Acting Award: 'I’m delighted and honoured to bestow this award on John Travolta for his performance in The Fanatic.' 

'It’s a stirring and surprising performance that succeeds in showing how dreams often turn into nightmares in Hollywood.'

John Travolta's character Moose is a huge fan of movie star Hunter Dunbar, played by Devon Sawa, and his devotion to him takes an ugly turn when he doesn't get an autograph at an event.

The film, directed by Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, was given a limited theatrical release on August 30, 2019.

On Rotten Tomatoes the film holds an approval rating of 18% based on 57 reviews, with an average score of 3.5/10. 

John recently revealed he too had his own stalker scare as he told People: 'I lived in Santa Barbara about 30 years ago, and someone snuck into my house. I opened the closet, and there she was.

'It did scare me, but it turned out to be an innocent person. She was a girl who probably wanted to meet me and didn’t know how to do it.'
