RuPaul announces new Celebrity Drag Race spin-off series debuting on VH1 in 2020

While fans wait for the 12th season of RuPaul's Drag Race on VH1, RuPaul announced a new spin-off, RuPaul's Celebrity Drag Race, on Tuesday.

The 58 year old drag queen (born RuPaul Andre Charles) announced the spin-off at Vanity Fair's Vanity Fair's 6th Annual New Establishment Summit at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, California.

The series is slated to debut in 2020, with celebrity guests joined by RuPaul's Drag Race alums who help with their transformations.

'Doing drag does not change who you are, it reveals who you are,' RuPaul said in a statement.

'I can’t wait for the world to see what happens when our celebrity contestants get all up in drags!'

Other RuPaul's Drag Race stars confirmed to return include Alyssa Edwards, Asia O’Hara, Bob the Drag Queen, Kim Chi, Monét X Change, Monique Heart, Nina West, Trinity the Tuck, Trixie Mattel, and Vanessa Vanjie Mate.

While the celebrity contestants have not yet been announced, they will be competing to win the title of America’s Next Celebrity Drag Superstar.

There will also be a cash prize awarded that will be donated to the charity of the winning celebrity's choosing.

The flagship series, which debuted on Logo in 2009 until 2016 before switching to VH1 in Season 9, has already spawned several spin-offs.

RuPaul's Drag U ran from 2010 to 2012, where three women were paired with Drag Race contestants and given makeovers in Los Angeles.

RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars launched in 2012 and was recently renewed for a new season, featuring past contestants returning and competing for spots in the Drag Race Hall of Fame.

Other spin-offs include The Switch Drag Race launching in 2015, Drag Race Thailand that debuted in 2018 and Drag Race UK that debuted earlier this year.

The original series has won 13 Emmy's, including it's Emmy win for Best Reality Competition Series in September.

Celebrity Drag Race will be produced by World of Wonder Productions with Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Tom Campbell, Steven Corfe, Mandy Salangsang and RuPaul serving as executive producers. 

Tim Palazzola serves as executive producer for VH1, and Jen Passovoy also serves as a producer.
