X Factor: Celebrity saw a huge twist on Saturday night as Vinnie Jones stepped down from the competition in a bid to save Kevin McHale, only for Simon Cowell to overrule him.

The football legend, 54, and the TV star, 31, landed in the bottom two as they received the least amount of votes from viewers at home.

However, Vinnie's gallant sacrifice went in vain as show boss Simon insisted he stay and continue in the show.

End of the road: With that, Kevin was eliminated from the competition, leaving both him and Vinnie floored by the turn of events

Close call: The football legend, 54, and the TV star, 31, landed in the bottom two as they received the least amount of votes from viewers at home

Both Vinnie and Kevin pulled off stellar sing-off performances, with Vinnie moving everyone to tears with an emotional acappella rendition of Galway Shawl.

Ahead of the judges vote, the star decided that it was his time to leave the show and made to sacrifice his place in the competition to keep Kevin in.

The footballing legend explained: 'I feel that I had a fantasist time' adding that the experience was 'everything I've needed since my wife's passing.'

He went on to praise Kevin, stating that he was a 'real singer' whom he thinks could  'win it'.

After explaining his situation, he concluded: 'For that reason I'd like to step down.'

However, in a shock move, Simon went against his wishes and instead insisted that he continue, joking that he didn't want to get on the wrong side of him.

The music mogul demanded that he make the 'final decision' and called for the judges to continue voting regardless.

Nicole Scherzinger, who mentors Vinnie, chose to save him, while Louis Walsh opted to protect his act Kevin.

The final vote was down to Simon, who chose to save Vinnie despite him wanting to go home.

Joking that he wouldn't want the hard man as an enemy, Simon quipped: 'The last person in the world I'd like to have a fall-out with is Vinnie, I don't want to be Gazza.'

He added that 'we're gonna have to fall out as I want you in the comp', and went on to say that his was 'voting with my heart.'

With that, Kevin was eliminated from the competition, leaving both him and Vinnie floored by the turn of events.

However, the singer took it all in his stride and thanked the show and fans for voting for him, adding that he had a great time.

Fans at home were equally as shocked by the shock twist, with many slamming Simon for overruling Vinnie's decision.

One viewer raged: ‘Simon… what are you doing.’

While another angrily said: ‘@TheXFactror awful awful awful decision. Is this a singing competition or a reward for people that @SimonCowell begged to do the show?’

A third fumed: ‘VINNY JONES DOESN’T EVEN WANT TO BE #XFaxctor, WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.’

‘#XFactor absolute shambles Kevin should of went through!’ ranted a fourth watcher.
