However, Vinnie's gallant sacrifice went in vain as show boss Simon insisted he stay and continue in the show.

Both Vinnie and Kevin pulled off stellar sing-off performances, with Vinnie moving everyone to tears with an emotional acappella rendition of Galway Shawl.

Ahead of the judges vote, the star decided that it was his time to leave the show and made to sacrifice his place in the competition to keep Kevin in.

The footballing legend explained: 'I feel that I had a fantasist time' adding that the experience was 'everything I've needed since my wife's passing.'

'So I went, "Okay, out of the smoking, the drinking, and diet, what do I have to drop?" And he said, "The diet." So I said, "I'm in!"

'It was easier than I thought, and part of the reason I did it was because of Eric. I realised if I didn't sort myself out physically, I wouldn't be able to catch up with him.
