James Corden makes a surprise appearance dressed as fashion icon Anna Wintour at the National Portrait Gallery Gala

The Late Late Show host James Corden hit the red carpet for the National Portrait Gallery Gala in a traditional tux, but he made a surprise costume change on stage.

The 41 year old comedian and late night host took to the stage wearing a wig styled in Wintour's signature chin-length bob plus black sunglasses and a full-length, fur-lined black coat.

Corden joked that, 'Anna Wintour has not had much impact on my life' while on stage dressed up like her, to present her with the Portrait of a Nation prize.

Corden joked, 'I have never felt more powerful than walking backstage dressed like this. It's incredible. I'm walking, I'm like, 'Bezos, get me a coffee,' he said, referring to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who was also presented with a portrait at the event.

The comedian eventually removed the costume and revealed that he first met Wintour in 2012, while he was acting on Broadway.

'She knew that my wife and I had moved to New York with our 1-year-old son, and she asked if there was anything I needed whilst I was in the city,' Corden revealed, via Vogue.

'I replied, "I just need a friend." And Anna said, 'I can do that,' Corden added about Wintour.

'So, the next day, somewhat cheekily I dropped her an email asking if we could become best friends,' Corden continued.

'And this set in motion, without question, one of the most rewarding and enriching friendships of my life,' he added.

'For over 40 years, she's devoted her life, her blood, her sweat and tears to the fashion industry, and you would be right in thinking it is the most elegant sweat in the world,' Corden joked.

The comedian, a U.K. native, added that he was 'proud' that the, 'single most influential person in American fashion is an immigrant from the United Kingdom,' adding that she was the most influential immigrant since the Statue of Liberty.

Wintour took the stage and thanked Corden for his spirited introduction, comparing his look to Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, a character inspired by Wintour.

Sparkle like Anna in a sequin Chanel jacket

She's the editor of the ultimate fashion bible, Vogue, so you can always rely on Anna Wintour to get it right in the style department.

Stepping out to a gala in NYC, the fashion legend turned to her favourite go-to design house, Chanel. Anna wore a look from the autumn/winter '18 couture collection, featuring a pleated brown maxi skirt and multi-coloured sequin jacket.

Sequins are of course a staple at this time of year when party season is in full swing, but why not take a leaf out of Anna's book and swap a sequin dress for a jacket instead?

Try one of the similar options below, then simply team with a maxi skirt to give a nod to the Chanel catwalk, or style with leather skinnies for an edgy spin.

'James, thank you for an introduction that can only be called unusual. I wouldn't dare say whether you or (Meryl Streep) did it better, but I can say that I've never in my life felt so incredibly flattered and yet, at the same time, frightened,' Wintour joked.

She also took a jab at herself, questioning the 'judgment' of the National Portrait Gallery for allowing her inclusion into their ranks.

'I want to thank the people at the National Portrait Gallery, the remarkable (director Kim Sajet) and her selection committee, for whatever lapse in their otherwise impeccable judgment led to me being here tonight,' she said.
