Camila Cabello says she and Shawn Mendes both 'liked each other' after first collab but 'weren't together': 'It was weird'

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes 'both liked each other' but it wasn't the right time to be 'together' after bonding over their first song together in 2015.

The former Fifth Harmony singer, 22, opened up about her romance with the Canadian, 21, crooner during an interview with Rolling Stone, explaining how while they first connected as friends, both knew they had feelings for one another.

'It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren't together,' she told the magazine, 'It was weird.'

The pair first got to know each other while writing the 2015 track I Know What You Did Last Summer together.

'During I Know What You Did Last Summer, I really bonded with him as more than a friend,' Camila, 22, said.

While there was an instant connection, things were complicated for both Shawn and Camila.

'I think he did, too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don't think we knew what to do with those feelings.'

Those feelings never developed into a full-fledged relationship.

'It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren't together. It was just weird,' she went on.

Though there was always a spark, things didn't come full circle until they began writing music together again years later.

'An energy was there from the beginning,' Camila explained, 'but after that song, we didn't spend as much time together.

'Our paths just didn't cross in that way romantically until we started hanging out again and writing. For me, it just brought it back.'

Since then, they've packed on the PDA across the country, in addition to giving several steamy performances of their track Senorita.

Though the couple are excellent collaborators, Camila's next musical steps will be on her own.

Cabello dropped the first single from her new album Romance called Living Proof on Friday.

She's also announced she will go out on tour next summer in support of the album.

The former Fifth Harmony member explained in a tweet: 'I wanted this album to sound like what falling love feels like, pretty impossible thing to do but I can say I gave it all I had.'

She went on: 'I’ve never lived as much life as I did writing this album. It was messy and beautiful, unforgettable and at times so painful I wish I could forget. It was excruciatingly consuming and impossible not to get lost in. It was mine… and now it’s yours. I hope you love it as much as I’ve loved living it.'
