He is currently on a press trip in Australia, where he is promoting Wild Turkey whiskey and his new 'eco cabin' business.

And Matthew McConaughey has revealed he narrowly avoided death during a previous visit Down Under, when he encountered a venomous brown snake.

During an interview on the Today show, the 50-year-old actor recalled almost stepping on the deadly reptile when he was an exchange student in the 1980s.

When asked what his favourite Australian animal was, he said: 'The brown snake. When I was here, I almost stepped on one. I should have been bitten.'

Matthew had encountered the dangerous serpent at a friend's house in Warnervale, around 95km north of Sydney's CBD.

'It was a bit dark. It went right through my legs and gave me bit of a scare,' he said.

The brown snake, native to eastern and central Australia, is considered the world's second-most venomous land snake.

Since 2000, the species has been responsible for 23 deaths.

If left untreated, its venom can cause cardiac arrest, cardiovascular collapse and hemorrhage.
