In psychology, what is "guilt," and what are the stages of guilt development?
The feeling of guilt is an emotion that occurs when someone is convinced that he/she has done something wrong. The guilt affective state can be approached either in a cognitive manner, or psycho-dynamic manner. The guilt emotion is a inner state that can be classified as a negative feeling such sadness or loneliness. The feeling of guilt has more than one cause, such that:
- cause 1: guilt for something you did wrong;
- cause 2: guilt for something you did not do but you think that you should have been do it
- cause 3: guilt for doing something that seems it's not enough
According to the researcher M.L Hoffman, in the development of feeling of guilt there exists 4 stages :infancy, early childhood; middle childhood; adolescence to adulthood.
