Baker, VanVleet Named Olson Award Finalists

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State guards Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet are among the 25 finalists for the Lute Olson Award, given annually by to its national player of the year in college basketball.

Baker – a junior from Scott City, Kan. – and VanVleet - a junior from Rockford, Ill. - helped lead the Shockers (30-5) to the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16.

Baker averaged a team-high 14.7 points to go with 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals. His 80 three-pointers led the MVC and is the second-highest single-season total in Shocker history.

VanVleet ranked among the national leaders at 5.2 assists per game, and his 13.6 points was second on the team behind Baker.

The Olson Award is named in honor of Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons – 24 of them at the University of Arizona.

Finalists also represent the Lute Olson All-America team. Freshmen are not eligible for the award but may be named to the team.

The 2015 recipient will be announced the Awards Banquet on April 3 in Indianapolis, site of the 2015 men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
