Russian lawmakers fail to pass any of five articles of impeachment against President Boris N. Yelstin. The outcome avoided a constitutional crisis

At least 53 Kosovo Albanian refugees are killed when their roadside camp was bombed in an area that had been under intense NATO air strikes for days. 

In Israel – Ehud Barak – a decorated soldier who has vowed to seek peace with the Arabs, defeats Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a landslide.

The Senate votes to require that all handguns be sold with trigger locks or other child safety devices.

In a response to the spate of recent school shootings - The Senate passes a bill that would impose new gun control measures for the first time in five years. Among other things – the bill revokes the right of gun ownership for anyone convicted of a gun crime as a juvenile… Makes it easier to charge juveniles as young as 14 with violent federal crimes… requires gun safety devices to be sold with all handguns… requires background checks on all firearm transactions at guns shows and pawnshops.

The Clinton administration will implement guidelines that virtually guarantee legal residency in the United States for as many as 500,000 immigrants from El Salvador and Guatemala.

The same day the Senate passes stricter gun control laws - In Conyers, Georgia -  T.J. Solomon, a 15-year-old boy opens fire at his high school wounding six fellow students then tearfully cried, “I’m so scared,” before surrendering his gun. Earlier, he told fellow students that the Columbine shooting was cool.  

Vice President Al Gore reports a net worth of $800,000 with assets of $1.4 million and liabilities of $600,000. He’s about to hit the campaign trail.

Fascinating Facts – Knievel – May 15, 1999

Daredevil Robbie Knievel clears a sliver of the Grand Canyon, breaking his world record of 223 feet. Knievel soared 55 feet over the 200foot-wide gorge at 90mph on a 500-cc motorcycle. Had he failed, he risked plunging 2,500 feet to the canyon floor of the Hualapai Indian Reservation near Grand Canyon National Park


Technology News – May 15, 1999

High Tech – MTV will acquire Internet music site SonicNet and the Box music television network from TCI Music in exchange for a 10% stake in its online music business.

HP says it will release something called the “E-Speak” code – that if adopted, would allow users to seek out the Internet more easily.

NBC will merge its Internet assets with Xoom.com and Snap.com to form a $4 billion publicly traded company. Using Snap as its brand, the new company will have more than $800 million worth of NBC ad time to drive users to NBCi’s Internet holdings.


Television news – May 15, 1999

E! Channel “Talk Soup” host John Henson will be leaving to pursue opportunities with ABC.

TV writer-producer and former teen idol Shaun Cassidy inks a three-year drama development deal with Barry Diller’s Studios USA. Cassidy created the CBS drama “American Gothic’ and co-created the fox drama “Roar” and NBC’s “Players.”

 Susan Lucci finally receives an Emmy – After being nominated 19 times in as many years – Susan Lucci of “All My Children” gets an Emmy as best actress in a drama series!

Andy Dick of “Newsradio” appears in court to face charges of drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs after driving a car into a utility pole in Hollywood. He then tried to run away.

Diana Sawyer and Charles Gibson will remain as hosts of “Good Morning America” for at least another year. The show’s ratings have risen some 27% since they began. 

Rosie O’Donnell gets into a spat over gun control with guest Tom Selleck, who recently filmed a commercial with the National Rifle Association. The subject of the Columbine High massacre came up and it was he against her. She later apologized about the incident to her audience. 

Capitalizing on the pro wrestling phenomenon, MTV has purchased the script “Tag Team” to be one of the channel’s upcoming made-for-TV movies. It’s described as “Revenge of the Nerds” in the world of pro wrestling.
