Recently departed White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is backing Roy Moore over President Trump's pick, Luther Strange, in an upcoming special election for Attorney General Jeff Sessions' seat as an Alabama senator, according to a report Monday evening.

Bannon, now the head of Breitbart News, told the Conservative Action Project in a closed-door meeting in Washington, D.C., last week he would back the former state Supreme Court justice over the acting senator.

However, Bannon's difference in opinion is not necessarily meant as a jab to Trump.

Bannon told the group of conservatives it was meant as a stand against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who supports Strange in the race, according to Politico.
