This book contains a selection of papers that were presented at the fifth CLIN (Computational Linguistics In the Netherlands) meeting. This meeting was held in Enschede on November 23, 1994. It was organized by the Parlevink Research Group of the Centre for Telematics and Information Technology of the University of Twente.

The aim of the CLIN meetings is to provide an opportunity for computational linguists to report on their work. The CLIN meeting also functions as an informal meeting place. As in previous years the meeting was not only attended by Dutch and Belgian computational linguists. We were especially happy that Annie Zaenen from Rank Xerox Europe, Meylan (France) was able to give the keynote lecture of the meeting.

In addition to the keynote lecture there were 23 presentations. 15 papers were eventually submitted for inclusion in these proceedings. After the reviewing procedure, a selection of 11 papers remained. Together with the invited paper by Annie Zaenen (co-authored by Geoff Nunberg) you find them here. The CLIN V proceedings are also available electronically, via World Wide Web, as a subpage of the Home Page of CLIN:

It is also possible to get the papers by anonymous ftp to in directory pub/vannoord/Clin5.

We would like to thank all people who contributed to the fifth CLIN meeting. In particular we are grateful to the reviewers (Walter Daelemans, Gertjan van Noord, Jan van Eijck, René Leermakers, Gerrit van der Hoeven, Rieks op den Akker, Franciska de Jong and Cees van Deemter). Secretarial help was provided by Charlotte Bijron and Alice Hoogvliet. We also acknowledge help from René Steetskamp in the preparation of the meeting.

The sixth CLIN meeting will be held in Antwerp (Belgium) on December 1, 1995 and on November 30 the language industry in Flanders will present their industrial activities and interests. We are looking forward to enjoy the Belgian cultural and scientific scene. See you there!
