PhD Positions in Linguistics, August 2006

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) announces the following positions:

Two PhD Positions in Theoretical Syntax

The successful applicants will carry out research, resulting in a PhD dissertation, within the NWO project 'Dependency in Universal Grammar', supervised by Jan-Wouter Zwart.

The subprojects we have in mind for the two PhD positions advertized here are described in sections 8.1 and 8.2, on the morphosyntactic expression of dependency within the clause and within the noun phrase. In the context of this project, we will soon be hiring a postdoctoral researcher as well.

What we are looking for: applicants with a keen interest in both minimalist syntactic theory and morphosyntactic typology.
What we offer: participation in the research activities of the Syntax & Semantics group of the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen, itself a participant in the Landelijke Onderzoeksschool Taalkunde (LOT), a joint enterprise of the linguistics sections of the universities of the Netherlands, which offers the LOT Summer/Winterschools to all its associated promovendi.

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) is a research institute within the Faculty of Arts of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. It embraces all the linguistic research in the faculty. A considerable number of the researchers participate in the national Landelijke Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap (LOT) and in the local School of Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN). Within the CLCG there are six research groups: Syntax/Semantics, Discourse and Communication, Language Variation and Change, Computational Linguistics, Neurolinguistics, and Language and Literacy Development over the Life Span. There are promovendi and graduate students working in all of these groups, including currently four promovendi in theoretical syntax.

Conditions:

The positions begin Nov. 1, 2006, ending October 31, 2010. The positions require residence in Groningen, 36 hours/week research, and must result in a PhD dissertation. Gross salary between EUR 1933 and 2472 per month (figures based on 100% employment).
