Coding in
speech examples
In examples from spontaneous speech, several codes are used,
most of which correspond to the CHAT symbols in the CHILDES
database
(MacWhinney 1995):
- [!]
- The preceding word has
stress.
- #
- A pause.
- (text)
- Non-completion of a word.
When a word is
incomplete but the intended meaning is clear, the missing
material is inserted
within parentheses.
- xxx
- Unintelligible speech.
- [/]
- Retracing without
correction.
- [//]
- Retracing with
correction.
-
[=! text]
- Paralinguistic
material.
- +\
- Interrupted utterance.
- +...
- An incomplete, but
not interrupted
utterance.
- -:
- Lengthening of the
previous
word.
quant./non-quant- In order not to
let
the distinction
between nee (anaphoric no) and geen
(the quantifier no) get lost in English translations
of Dutch examples, they are disambiguated by the labels
non-quant. and quant., respectively.
