Coding in speech examples

In examples from spontaneous speech, several codes are used, most of which correspond to the CHAT symbols in the CHILDES database (MacWhinney 1995):

[!]
The preceding word has stress.
#
A pause.
(text)
Non-completion of a word. When a word is incomplete but the intended meaning is clear, the missing material is inserted within parentheses.
xxx
Unintelligible speech.
[/]
Retracing without correction.
[//]
Retracing with correction.
[=! text]
Paralinguistic material.
+\
Interrupted utterance.
+...
An incomplete, but not interrupted utterance.
-:
Lengthening of the previous word.

quant./non-quant
In order not to let the distinction between nee (anaphoric no) and geen (the quantifier no) get lost in English translations of Dutch examples, they are disambiguated by the labels non-quant. and quant., respectively.
