Graduate Fellowships in Linguistics

Neurolinguistisc

The research of this group focuses on language representation in the brain. Data acquisition is done through studying both language impaired (aphasia, schizophrenia, Parkinson's Disease, developmental impairments and dyslexia) and non-brain-damaged people. An important part of the research is done by Neuro Imaging, for which both fMRI and ERP are used.

At present, most studies are on grammatical aspects, but other topics have been studied as well (e.g. processing of ambiguous words and sentences, lexical semantics and phonology). There is a tradition of studying language processing in both healthy and impaired speakers from a cross-linguistic point of view. Right now, there is work in progress on Dutch, Italian, Russian and Turkish. We wish to extend the number of languages.

The Neurolinguistic group is an active one and currently consists of four senior researchers and six PhD students. There are intensive collaboration projects with universities in and outside Europe and the researchers participate in international research groups, such as the Mental Lexicon (funded by the Canadian government), Multilingual Multidisciplinary Studies on Brain and Language (MMSBL; funded by ESF) and the AphasiaBank (funded by NIH).

We are in the process of establishing an international PhD-program, together with the University of Potsdam (DE).
