Varieties of English, Final Assignment

One of the following, reporting your results in a paper of approximately 4,000 words, due at 5 pm on Jan. 8.:

  1. Examine the phonological properties of one of the varieties in Kortman et al. with respect to one of the theoretical frameworks presented by Schneider, Shackleton, Mufwene, or Szmrecsanyi and Kortmann. Use the software provided to analyse the aggregate relations, and try to isolate the most important properties in your analysis.

  2. Following Szmrecsanyi and Kortmann's analysis of different varieties along morphosyntactic properties, contrast the first-language varieties vs. pidgins and creoles on the basis of their phonological properties. Use the software provided to analyse the aggregate relations, and attempt to find phonological that seem to characterize the pidgins and creoles, even if these are tendencies more that perfect characterizations.
