summary This chapter describes the syntactic structure and crosslinguistic variation of coordinate structures, with special attention to the nature of the coordinating conjunction, resolution rules for agreement with coordinate subjects, the opacity of coordinate structures, and signs of asymmetry within coordinate structures. The chapter also discusses the derivation of coordinate structures within generative grammar, and calls into question the commonly held view that coordinate structures are headed by the coordinating conjunction.
