Introduction

You will find nearly all of the content of this lecture described in C.J. Van Rijsbergen's book, Information Retrieval [VR79] and ``Introduction to Modern Information Retrieval by Gerard Salton [SM83]. These are considered the definitive textbooks in information retrieval. Van Rijsbergen's book is also available on-line. [WSJ97] is also a good overview of different IR research directions.
