When comparing phonetic transcriptions, even if the standardized IPA-system is used, language-specific transcriptional traditions are visible. As our database and the string comparisons run with it rely on comparable data, in this project the phonetic transcription is checked for comparability in contrastive studies. The systematic contrasts between phonetic-phonemic systems of languages such as Danish and Swedish are then related to problems in word recognition. In this way, real user problems are identified. The goal of the project is to present which systematic changes need to be made in transcription to provide well-suited comparable data input, and to change the database accordingly.
