It is often claimed that the Danish orthography, being conservative, is further away and less systematically related to the phoneme system than Swedish. In this project, we wish to prove this claim by quantitatively comparing the relations between letters and sounds in the two languages, and comparing the languages in this respect. The project has direct relevance for our intelligbility research, as it is connected to the project on the role of orthography in language comprehension. In this way, we also intend to provide basic background knowledge about the phono-orthographic involved in intelligibility experiments.
