Idiomatic expressions like out of the woods and up the ante present a range of difficulties for natural language processing applications. We present work on the annotation and extraction of potentially idiomatic expressions (PIEs), which are a superclass of idiomatic expressions, covering both literally and idiomatically used idiomatic expressions. We look into the feasibility of using dictionary-based extraction of PIEs as a tool for both corpus building and automatic idiom processing. In this talk, we will look at the reliability and coverage of idiom dictionaries, the annotation of a corpus of PIEs, and the automatic extraction of PIEs from a large corpus.
