Intelligibility of Nordic dialects by speakers of Danish and Norwegian

(with Karin Beijering, University of Groningen)

We investigated the intelligibility of 18 Nordic dialects among high school pupils in Copenhagen. The results showed high correlations between phonetic distances and intelligibility. More detailed analyses are being carried out in order to investigate the role of consonants and vowels for the intelligibility. The experiments will be repeated in Oslo in order to test whether Norwegians are in general better than Danes at understanding Nordic varieties as has been claimed in the literature.
