There is no exact equivalent to wel in English. When this adverb has particular stress, it expresses a strong contrast to a negative proposition (Geerts et al. 1984; Sassen 1985). In English, approximately the same meaning is expressed by really, indeed, or by focusing the auxiliary verb, as in So he did[!] come!
