The different patterns may even coexist in the data of individual children. For example, in the recorded data of one boy, two interrogative utterances were found in which hoeven appears unlicensed with an affirmative meaning:

i

op hoeft # huh? dis-is opp(l)akke(n)? (2;03.04)
on needs # huh? this-is stick-on?
ii

hoeft er op? (2;06.11)
needs there on?

And also one utterance in which unlicensed hoeven has a negative meaning:

iii

ik hoef wijkoek. (2;04.28)
I need honeycake.

The above utterances occur in the same period with several correct utterances in which hoeven is licensed by niet (not), for example:

iv

ik hoef niet koekje hebben. (2;06.11)
I need not cookie have.
