The different patterns may even coexist in the data of individual children. For example, in the recorded data of one boy, two interrogative utterances were found in which hoeven appears unlicensed with an affirmative meaning:

And also one utterance in which unlicensed hoeven has a negative meaning:

The above utterances occur in the same period with several correct utterances in which hoeven is licensed by niet (not), for example:

I need not cookie have.
