As an aside, it is interesting to note that the contamination of hoeven with nodig hebben (to be in need of) is a recurrent phenomenon in the child data. See for instance the following example from the corpus of recorded speech:

Note that hoeven also is mixed up sometimes with moeten (must/have to) (cf. Note 9 in Chapter 3) and the meaning of to like or want (cf. Note 5 in Chapter 2). Such contaminations show that hoeven for children, possibly even more than for adults, is strongly connected with a modal meaning and first of all serves to express personal wants and needs.
