The Story of Ethan Allen (1738-1789)

Conclusion

The state of Vermont was created by a motivation to acquire both liberty and freedom. Ethan Allen had a motivation to acquire land for him and his family. In the library of Thomas Young he learned of republicanism and rights he was entitled to. This desire to provide for his family and not become a failure at life, led Allen into the Green Mountains of Vermont. It was there that he waged war against the Yorkers, British, and even Congress. All were parties with their own reasons to oppose the formation of Vermont as an independent state.
