Angelina and Sarah Grimkéwere born into a large family of wealthy slaveowners in elegant Charleston, South Carolina. These sisters moved to the North to defend the rights of blacks and women.As speakers for the New York Anti-Slavery Society, they were the first women to publicly lecture to audiences, including men.
In letters, essays, and studies, they drew parallels between racism and sexism.
